May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and honestly?
There’s one conversation I wish more people in aesthetics were having.
Not about anti-ageing.
Not about glowing skin.
Not about expensive serums.
But about sunscreen.
Because I can do the most incredible treatments in clinic…
We can work on pigmentation, texture, fine lines, scarring, collagen stimulation…
But if you are not protecting your skin daily?
You are constantly undoing the work.
And more importantly than aesthetics — you are increasing damage to the skin every single day without even realising it.
The scary part is most sun damage doesn’t show up immediately.
It builds quietly over years.
The pigmentation.
The redness.
The broken capillaries.
The leathery texture.
And in more serious cases… skin cancers that often begin as “just a little mark.”
That’s why SPF is not optional.
Even in the UK.
Even when it’s cloudy.
Even when you’re “not sunbathing.”
And when it comes to protection, I will always lean towards physical sunscreens for many patients — especially sensitive, reactive, post-treatment, or pigmentation-prone skin.
Why?
Because physical sunscreens sit on the skin and reflect UV rays away, rather than absorbing them into the skin first.
They’re often gentler.
Less irritating.
And brilliant after treatments when the skin barrier is already vulnerable.
Think of them as a shield rather than a sponge.
And honestly?
The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually wear consistently.
