Dear family, friends, and kind strangers,
In May 2024, our world was turned upside down when my wonderful husband, Gavin, was diagnosed with Glioblastoma (GBM)—an aggressive stage-4 brain cancer with no cure and a bleak prognosis. He was just 35 years old with everything to live for. On the day of his diagnosis, Gavin was given less than a year to live. If you know or have met Gavin, you know he is a grafter, a fighter, a loyal and loving husband, a friend, and a devoted father to four young boys. He is someone who has always brought joy to those he holds close, and we decided in that moment that we would not accept this fate.
Over the last two years, Gavin has endured rigorous and invasive treatments. This includes three surgeries, multiple rounds and variations of chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Furthermore, as a result of your unbelievable generosity from our previous fundraiser—in which we raised over £100,000—Gavin has travelled to a specialist multi-modal immunotherapy clinic in Germany seven times. There, he received a variety of immunotherapy treatments, including checkpoint inhibitors, hyperthermia, virotherapy, and a personalised dendritic cell vaccine. Your kind donations and fundraising have also financed a full and comprehensive daily metabolic protocol to inhibit and regulate growth pathways, altering the microenvironment of the tumour to allow for better treatment outcomes.
I am over the moon to share with you that after nine consecutive bad scans at the start of Gavin’s journey, we have received our fourth consecutive positive scan, which has shown another small reduction in tumour volume! Gavin has now surpassed his prognosis by more than a year, and we have you to thank. We hope very much that we can continue making memories as a family with your help.
While the scan results continue to head in the right direction, unfortunately, the treatment side effects and the disease itself have taken a significant and detrimental toll on Gavin’s quality of life. Gavin has secondary epilepsy and was left significantly sight-impaired after his third surgery. He was also left with left-sided weakness and reduced coordination from TIAs he experienced last year due to chemotherapy side effects, alongside long-term, chemotherapy-induced difficulties with temperature regulation and his immune system. As a result of brain damage, Gavin now also experiences significant memory loss and sensory challenges. He suffers from significant steroid-induced bone pain, which currently impacts his ability to maintain his daily walking routine which has helped retain his mobility against the odds.
We recently made the decision to halt treatment in Germany due to these ongoing daily challenges and instead concentrate on Gavin’s quality of life at home with our children. The remaining funds from our previous fundraiser allowed us to maintain his full metabolic protocol up to this point, which costs approximately £4,000 each month. We have now utilised all of those funds and are starting from zero. Considering that our approach has changed, we decided to close our old fundraiser (which suggested we still needed to raise upwards of £150,000) and share our new approach and smaller financial goal to reflect our current situation.
Our Goal
We need to raise £40,000 to build a dedicated home therapy room. This environment will house a medical-grade Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber (HBOT) and high-intensity Red-Light (Photobiomodulation) Therapy equipment. These therapies are vital for reducing brain and systemic inflammation, targeting cancer stem cells, and boosting Gavin’s immune system. This goal will also cover 12 months of vital maintenance supplements, metabolic protocol items, and the room setup.
We have done it before, and with a significantly reduced goal, I truly believe that we can do it again. Every single pound brings us closer to giving Gavin more time, more comfort, and a real fighting chance at longer-term survival to make precious memories with his young family.
When reflecting on the kindness we have been shown by family, friends, and strangers, we decided we wanted to give something back. When the medical-grade therapy room is complete, we will be offering it to other cancer patients within our local community to use. All we will ask for is a small donation in the pot to keep the electricity running. Considering the cost of short blocks of these therapies in clinics can run into the thousands, we hope this will offer others access to therapeutic treatment that would otherwise be inaccessible.
We will never forget the community that came together and helped us achieve something truly special, and we hope you can help us once again. If you are not in a position to donate, please interact with our social media and share our page; you may reach someone who can.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
