What is 'sundowning'? 🤔

As September brings earlier sunsets and darker evenings, some people living with dementia may experience something known aAs September brings earlier sunsets and darker evenings, some people living with dementia may experience something known a “sundowning” 🌅

This can involve increased confusion, restlessness, anxiety or agitation later in the day, often as daylight begins to fade.

Small things can help, such as keeping the environment calm and well-lit, sticking to familiar routines, reducing evening stimulation and offering plenty of reassurance and comfort 💚
