After being involved with a similar project in Central London, Alistair Poulain and Steve Collis formed Upper Limits UK Ltd in July 2000 & rebranded in 2020. The company is now dedicated to providing adventurous activities, events and professional training in a unique style that is normally associated with the British Armed Forces for individuals and business alike. Our activities, events and training programmes are designed to motivate, build team spirit and give all those who attend a sense of achievement and well-being. Active Training Solutions, A division of Upper Limits was set up mid 2005 to complement our other activities and provide Professional Training and Courses for people from all walks of life who are keen to develop or learn new skills associated with the leisure industry. Many of our small but professional team of instructors have served with the Army Physical Training Corps, which is directly responsible for the Physical, Adventurous and Recreational Training of the British Army, both in the UK and Overseas. This weekend saw us back over in the Brecon Beacons for what must have been our first October "dry" NNAS Gold award!

With favourable conditions and wanting to put these three outstanding delegates through their paces, we moved day 2 to an area we haven't done much on before, so new to most.

Day One was around familiar territory for me starting out from Dan yr Ogof taking in the crash site, spot lows, some other small features and getting in some early compass work. Thanks to James and the team for sorting the parking for us Dan-Yr-Ogof

On day two, to shake things up for this strong group of Navigators, to make up for the good conditions, we opted for some tough terrain

We started up from Trefil Quarry taking in "Dukes Table" & "The Naughty Stone", then up onto the 600m ring contour, 617m Trig, one of the Cairns and the Crash Site before really getting stuck into some full on compass work to take in features that weren't really visible until you were practically stood on them.

This was a tough Navigation day but pacing, accurate bearings and some great contour interpretation along with good cog nav paid off. Those attending this weekend should all be congratulated on the skills shown using both OS and Harvey 1:25,000 & 1:40,000 Ultra maps.

A good few day out on the Mendips in perfect conditions for this NNAS Silver Award.

The mist rolled in just in time for some compass work!

Congratulations to all successful navigators and also to those who attended continuation / consolidation training. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Next up is the NNAS Tutor Award (Old Sodbury, Cotswolds) on the 9th of October followed by two NNAS Gold awards (there is some availability on the 31st Oct & 1st Nov) Glyntawe, Brecon Beacons.

National Navigation Award Scheme Mountain Training

I keep needing to pinch myself and it still hasn't really sunk in that we have finally bagged both Mt Krn 2244m and Mt Triglav 2864m.

Mt Krn was always planned to be the warm up but in some ways it felt the harder of the two.

This was maybe due to both the incline and ascent from our start point. Even seeing this mountain from Kobarid it was quite off putting. For those familiar with Snowdonia it looked like Yr Aran or Cnicht but nearly 3 times higher! It proved to be a good test.

We had our route on Triglav planned to the finest detail and almost knew it like the back of our hand or at least what to expect on every one of the 5 legs we had split it into.

From Rudno polje, we completed the route up to Dom Planika in a little under 6 hours and had hoped to complete the final leg / climb and via faretta in under 4.

This section proved to be extremely busy so took 2 hours longer than planned. Nevertheless we were back down in time for dinner and before the storms started to roll in.

After a restless night with the wind (from
both outside and those we shared a dorm with) we were up at 6am for sunrise, breakfast and to start our descent before the weather changed for the worse.

It was good to drop below 1800m, get out of the wind, chill with coffee at Vodnikov Dom and then simply put up with the rain until dropping a further 300m.

Absolutely loved this experience and yes, we have just bagged the highest peak in Slovenia 🇸🇮 an incredible and epic experience.

Well done to Lyn (NNAS Tutor) who has achieved so much in the last 6 years. Her journey from her first mountain to summiting on Triglav has been quite incredible.

A busy week! Back from delivering First Aid in Birmingham then straight into another NNAS Bronze - the second in two weeks.

A few days off follow before another First Aid course over in Wales and then prep for Slovenia 🇸🇮 where Mt Krn, Triglav and the River Soca await.

This weekends combined Outdoor First Aid & Emergency First Aid at Work course had a great mix of delivery. With practical scenarios, discussion, video clips. written work and scenarios to not only tap into different learning styles but ensured the course was tailored to meet the needs of individual delegates and their own outdoor activities and disciplines.

This included water based, hill and mountain leaders and specialist search and rescue teams.

What a week. Wednesday saw us run a NNAS Tutor Award and this weekend NNAS Gold.

Congratulations to all who attended their respective courses.

This weekend was especially good for us as once again we mixed up our Day 2 Gold and headed over to a part of the Bannau Brycheiniog - Brecon Beacons - National Park we have not used before. We took in Number a small navigational features along with the likes of some prominent cairns, the trig and Chatrits Cave. This area proved perfect for a summer gold.

Good to have Lyn along for some personal Nav Training in an area we have not explored previously.

Two great walks over the weekend both totally different..... one overgrown, the other not. One a coastal route the other on the hills.

Yesterday we did a route out from
Portishead on the and today it was Skirrid on the Beacons Way. For those in the group that had never done the Skirrid before, this was a great achievement.

Our next group walk is at Midford on the 25th July and then the next Whizz is on the 9th Aug on the Malverns. Please PM me if you would like to attend
