Rats feel empathy to such a degree that they will ignore a lever that releases a tempting chocolate treat in favor of one that saves a drowning friend.

Researchers placed one rat in a pool of water and another on a dry platform. The dry rat could push a door to let its soaking cagemate escape. Even when presented with a choice between helping their friend or getting chocolate, the rats chose to help 50% to 80% of the time.

Once the friend was safe, the helper rats often shared the chocolate with them. This suggests empathy is deeply rooted in biology, not just human culture.

📊 While it can affect any age, the median age for a formal diagnosis in the UK is 45 years old, with the vast majority of people diagnosed between the ages of 36 and 56.

📊 MS is heavily skewed toward women, who are two to three times more likely to receive a diagnosis than men.
