Internal pelvic floor assessments can feel like a bit of an unknown 🤍
You might be wondering what actually happens, whether you have to have one, or even whether you need to prepare in some way beforehand.
The first thing to know is: an internal assessment is always your choice.
There is lots I can assess and treat without one. But sometimes an internal assessment can give us really useful information about how your pelvic floor is functioning.
It can help me understand how well your muscles squeeze and lift, how strong and coordinated they are, whether they can fully relax, and whether there are areas of tension, tenderness or scar tissue.
And that last part is important.
Not every pelvic floor needs strengthening.
Sometimes the muscles are already holding too much tension, and learning how to relax and let go can be just as important as learning how to squeeze.
Following a tear, episiotomy or other birth injury, an internal assessment can also help us understand whether scar tissue or tension may be contributing to symptoms, and where appropriate I can use gentle internal techniques to work with these areas.
This is also personal for me. Internal pelvic floor assessment and treatment formed an important part of my own postnatal recovery, which is one of the reasons I feel so strongly about women knowing this kind of support exists. 🤍
I will always explain what I’m suggesting and why. You decide whether you feel comfortable going ahead, and you can change your mind or ask me to stop at any point.
Your body. Your choice. Always. 🤍
Internal pelvic floor assessment and treatment is available as part of my postnatal and pelvic health osteopathic care.
