Pouring rain, muddy boots, and a shared chat about dinosaurs. 🌧️🦖

Navigating social expectations with pathological demand avoidance (PDA) isn't easy, especially for those living with it! So stepping into a shared space and interacting with others takes an immense amount of courage.

We brought two of our wonderful clients together for a combined session, and it was a joy to witness. Out in the fresh air the everyday pressure lifted. They shared conversations, hid from the downpour to create a masterpiece together, and most importantly - made a friend who understood. 🎨

Seeing them feel comfortable to be themselves, running away with time and chatting about dinosaurs, is exactly what we're all about. 🌿

🌱 What Happens When a Young Person Makes Good Progress? 🌱

This is a question we are often asked at Dreams & Wonders Wellness Centre CIC.

Our aim has never been to keep young people in support indefinitely. Our role is to provide a safe, therapeutic, trauma-informed environment where children and young people can develop confidence, emotional regulation, resilience, self-belief and coping strategies.

For some, this journey may be longer than others. For some, they may reach a point where they no longer require the level of intervention we provide. When that happens, we celebrate it.

Progress should be recognised, not feared.

As a small specialist service, we regularly review placements to ensure that young people are receiving the most appropriate support for their needs. This may mean:

🌿 Continuing with Dreams & Wonders
🌿 Moving into a more specialist clinical service where deeper therapeutic intervention is required
🌿 Transitioning into group work focused on confidence, friendships, teamwork and reducing social isolation
🌿 Being supported to access opportunities within their local community

Success isn't measured by how long someone stays with us. Success is measured by growth, confidence, independence and positive change.

Our goal is always to help young people move forward, not become dependent on a service.

We are incredibly proud of every young person who walks through our gates, whether they attend for a few sessions or many months. Watching them grow is exactly why Dreams & Wonders exists. 💜🐴

The yard is buzzing with construction whilst we get everything sorted, which means things are a bit busier than usual!

But nobody is taking the job of 'Chief Site Supervisor' more seriously than Jamie, our eldest of the herd. Apparently, just witnessing this much productivity is exhausting! 😪

We caught him taking a well-earned break in the sunshine. Have a good nap Jamie, you deserve it! ❤💤

This session, we watched the tension melt away.

The tics stopped. The body shakes subsided. The anxiety-induced Tourette's were gone.

For anyone navigating severe anxiety or Tourette's, the physical toll is exhausting. Finding a moment where your body feels entirely yours again is rare. Today, that deep relief happened simply by sharing space with one of our herd. 🐴

We like to call it 'magic' - or some of our clients call it 'miracle' work, which we agree 😉 But it's all rooted in science and physiological synchrony.

Horses possess incredibly grounded nervous systems. When we take the time to be still with them, our heartbeats naturally sync with their slow, steady rhythm. The human nervous system gets the signal that it is safe to drop its guard.

In a single session, working with Swayze, we witnessed a complete reset. The muscles relaxed. The breathing deepened. This is the reality of the work we do at here - we get the absolute privilege of watching our herd offer peace 😌❤

"I can't get out.".
"Is your brain stuck?"
Nodding

We have all been there. Whether it's a new environment or a change in plans, sometimes the car feels like the only safe space. That overwhelm is real, and it's usually a sign that our nervous system needs a little more time to adjust before stepping into the unknown!

So how do we work through it? 💭

Today, we started by finding five things we could see.
→ The first thing on our list was the rearview mirror - it kept us feeling safe inside, but it let us start looking.
→ We slowly broadened our vision to the world outside, giving our brain the time it needed to get back on board.
→ From there, we moved to things we could smell - which acted as a bridge in sensory shift.
→ It finally gave us the space to step out, name those big feelings, and let those senses settle.

Transitions are hard work, especially when the world feels unpredictable. Sometimes, the best way forward is just finding one small way to feel grounded right where you are. 😌

The transformation is well underway! It's all hands on deck as we push forward with renovations. 🔨👷‍♀️

Its amazing to see our hard work paying off! Watching the frame come together makes the vision feel SO real. We are so excited to share this refreshed sanctuary with the community, and are so fortunate for all the support.

Many thanks to the Screwfix foundation for making this possible ❤️

a big thank you to Alex Appleby for doing the amazing brick work,

and last but not least, our BIG BOSS for putting all his time and effort into building this for us 🥰🥰
