How are you today? Fine? What - actually fine? Or...

F*cked off
Irrational
Neurotic
Emotionally exhausted kind of fine?

So many of us still say we're fine because we:

- Feel pretty much like we might fall apart if we say anything else - and absolutely cannot conceive of the falling apart bit
- Really don't want to tak about how much of a sh*t show it all feels beneath the surface
- Don't even have the time or energy to stop and think about it.

True story - we've been there.

In fact our founder, Abi, wrote about it on Substack - you can read it via the "Leading Lighter" link in our bio.

And if you're feeling like you need some confidential, non-judgemental, or even totally content-free (that's right, no uncomfortable sharing required) support to get to a place where you actually DO feel fine... pick up our book, 21 Days to a Better Brain on Amazon - or reach out for a free chat to learn how we could help.

Because your "fine"s really do need to mean it.

"Grief changes your relationship with time.

Before my dad became ill, I moved through life assuming there would always be more time... but after he died, something shifted in me permanently. I developed a quiet but constant fear that time was running out.

Although I didn't fully recognise it then, that fear began shaping almost every part of my life.

From the outside, my life often looked good... (...) but internally, I carried a constant sense of pressure and unease - a low level anxiety that never truly switched off.

Eventually, I came across Abi online...

For the first time in a long time, I felt understood. She helped me understand how the brain responds to stress, overwhelm and anxiety - and more importantly, how those patterns can change.

There was no endless dissecting of the past ...(...) The work was forward-focused, practical and surprisingly empowering. Gradually, the constant mental noise that had dominated my life began to quieten.

The overthinking softened. The fear of judgement loosened its grip. The pressure I had placed on myself for so many years slowly began to lift.

In its place came something unfamiliar at first: calm.

Not perfection. Not a life free from challenge. But a steadiness and clarity I had never experienced before.

And... those changes lasted. I am stronger now than I was even then.

I don't lose sleep over every detail or interpret setbacks as evidence I'm failing.

I'm not constantly bracing for disaster or allowing fear to dictate my decisions.

I communicate more calmly and honestly. I'm more spontaneous, more resilient and far kinder to myself. I've built healthier habits and boundaries that no longer disappear the moment life becomes stressful. I've finally been able to ask myself what I truly want from life - and begin building it with confidence".

An excerpt from the beautiful foreword Caroline wrote for 21 Days to a Better Brain - showing what life can look like when that constant internal pressure starts to lift, and it no longer feels like every day is a battle.

We hope, through this book, that we can help more people begin to feel what it's like to have that pressure begin to lift🤞🏻

"Wow. I can actually feel my nervous system relaxing for the first time in five years."

There's a huge amount of talk, these days, about nervous system regulation.

And much as we love the fact we're talking about it - we don't always love how that conversation is going.

Because - as is so often the case when something becomes a buzzword in wellbeing - we're neglecting something really, really important.

Thing is, nervous system regulation isn't something you should have to continually "do".

A healthy, well attuned nervous system... well, it regulates itself. That's our biological "normal" - our baseline as humans.

It's what we're designed for.

The fact that so many of us are feeling the need to constantly regulate ourselves?

That tells us that most people's nervous systems are far from ok right now.

Now, we're not knocking a bit of top-down calming - the breathing exercises, EFT, mindfulness, cold water plunges etc. are great (we love them too).

They bring those adrenaline spikes down temporarily, helping us feel more in control for a moment - helping us manage the fires burning in a system that's been operating on high alert for years.

But the thing is, they don't address what's causing us to feel so off kilter in the first place.

The past experiences that haven't been fully processed.

The unsupportive belief cycles that perpetuate chronic stress and hypervigilance.

The daily bombardment (not least with all the "shoulds" around optimal wellbeing - ironic, really!).

We need to be clear - a "managed" nervous system isn't necessarily a healthy one.

And what we need to be recognising - like our lovely client, quoted above - is that the need to constantly "regulate" is a sign that some deeper work is needed.

To get things back to that healthy baseline.

To re-establish calm as the default.

To re-engage with response rather than reaction.

And to feel "normal" again.

If this hits home, we'd be happy to talk about how we can help you re-baseline too - just reach out (website linked in our bio).

“She just needs to be more resilient.”

She’s holding back tears in the loos at work, again, after another meeting where she got interrupted, dismissed, made to feel small.

She has two kids, one with SEN, and ageing parents who need support.

Hasn’t had a full night’s sleep in 3 years, and is holding a team together through endless restructures - her own line manager hasn’t checked in properly in months.

But sure... she just needs to be more resilient 🙄

This is what we hear all the time in the workplace, right? But the reality is, she couldn't be more resilient if she tried!

She’s showing up every day, doing her best - despite the overwhelm, the stress, the personal cost.

To push even harder isn't MORE resilience. It's emotional suppression - and it's a ticking timebomb.

We've got this whole idea of resilience wrong.

Resilience isn't about 'coping anyway,' being 'fine' when you're not, toughing it out, pushing harder. That's the road to burnout.

Our nervous systems can only keep pushing for so long. And then... they start to push back.

We see the fallout every day - anxiety, stress, depression, diminished capacity and a whole host of physical and psychophysical symptoms. Which is why we think it's high time resilience had a rebrand.

Out with emotional disengagement - in with emotional regulation (that's a calm, healthily functioning nervous system, to you and me):

💪🏼 A regulated nervous system that's anchored in response, rather than reaction

💪🏼 That can process stress easily, ready for the next challenge

💪🏼 A feeling of confidence and inner steadiness, no matter what (or who) happens in your day

💪🏼 And feeling safe and secure enough in yourself to show up fully, every time - without it costing your health, happiness or authenticity.

This is the work we do.

It's what we aim for with all our clients, from a few sessions of therapy up to our high-level corporate programmes.

And it’s the future we need to be working towards.

If you’re ready to leave outdated 'resilience' behind and build real, lasting strength for you or your people, let’s talk.

It's time for a rethink.

And we're happy to lead the way.

One of the things we keep hearing over and over (which we love!) is just how easy and accessible our book, 21 Days to a Better Brain, is.

Because... when you're looking for help with your thinking, and dare we say possibly a little bit prone to overthinking... do you really need a whole heap of complex, confusing information to wade through before you can begin to move forward? Is MORE headscratching going to help the situation?

We thought not.

So, we designed the book around simple, digestible insights and exercises that help you start to feel better from Day 1. Simples.

And apparently, it's working! 🤩

Thank you SO much to Katy for this wonderful review.

Have you read any of 21 Days yet?

What's your top takeaway?

We've got news!

Our founder, Abi, is going "Back to school" this September, too - she's decided to study for an MSc in Business and Organisational Psychology, alongside continuing to see her clients and expand her leadership and organisational work for us here at The Better Brain Company.

Never a dull moment!

But we've always been passionate about doing things properly. Solution Focused work can be such a fantastic asset to innovative organisations, so it feels like a natural next step to really understand the moving pieces behind the challenges we help our professional clients overcome every day.

And as we love a challenge ourselves, we'll not only be keeping the wheels of our busy therapy & consultancy business turning... but we'll be putting our solution-focused thinking to the test and exploring how we can scale to support more of those busy professionals and organisations, too.

Watch this space! 😉

It's time for our next adventure...

"Keep going. Work harder. Push through."

Does anyone resonate with this? Even if you're just quietly nodding along, we see you.

We know this is exactly how it feels for many driven professionals - people like you, who have been sold the dream of having it all - but have never been shown how that's even possible.

We work with these people ALL the time.

We (Abi and Caroline) have both BEEN these people. And it's a hard habit to break - but it is absolutely possible to break it.

Caroline's story forms the foreword to our book, 21 Days to a Better Brain. In it, she bravely shares her own journey, from overwhelm, stress and struggle to finally feeling like she can take on the world and win. And now? She's flying.

We've heard from our readers that even just reading her story has helped them feel a little less alone - and a little more hopeful for the future.

We'd love you to read it too, and let us know what you think.

You can pick up a copy through the link in our bio (both Kindle and Paperback versions available)... or if you'd like to talk to us about getting some 1:1 support, just reach out.

If you're feeling anything but "back to school" super-motivated, shiny new pencil case vibes right now...
.. you're not alone.

As LinkedIn lights up with all the September fresh start posts, many founders and professionals are harbouring what feels like a massive guilty secret - they're not feeling it, at all.

Instead, they're feeling disconnected, demotivated, demoralised and like it will take an immense effort to get those cognitive wheels to begin turning again. It feels hard.

And with the added pressure of everyone else seeming to be having a jolly old time - old familiar feelings of guilt, shame and failure become easy company, too.

I know this because I'm working with several founders who are brave enough and self-aware enough to stop and say "this isn't ok" - and do something about it.

Because this isn't a failing at all. It's just the result of a nervous system locked in freeze mode.

A nervous system which has had enough, and is pushing back.

A nervous system that is trying its best to defend against burnout.

And we can choose to keep on pushing and denying that things aren't right.

Or, we can choose to help ourselves, lighten the load and get some support (if we need it) to shift the stuff that's clogging up the system.

That's what we do here at The Better Brain Company - for founders, leaders and driven professionals who just don't feel they can drive any more.

If you're feeling this, we'd love to chat about how we can help you move forward quickly, painlessly and without endlessly analysing the past.

Most of us complain that there's never enough time, right?

But all the while, we add to our mental and physical "to do" list with complex routines, additions and expectations.

The ironic thing is, much of what goes on that list is supposed to be focused on improving our lives - and in particular our wellbeing!

The world is full of tips and "shoulds" that sound fantastic in principle, until you realise they're actually causing you more stress than you started with (sound familiar?).

That's why one thing we've insisted on from the word "go", here at The Better Brain Company, is that anything we do needs to be centred around reducing stress for people - not adding to it.

That's why we're so flexible in terms of our session frequency and structure.

That's why we'll never tell you what we think you "should" be doing - but instead we'll help you find your own answers (you know, solutions and strategies that actually work to support you and your optimal functioning!).

And it's why our book, 21 Days to a Better Brain, is centred around simple, bitesized daily insights and super-manageable thought exercises... that mean you don't even have to take time out of your busy day to get your brain in a better place.

Because we know change - and change can only ever be positive if it's managable and realistic for you.

Interested to learn more about the book? Pop over to our bio and click through on the link, where you can read about it, download it on Kindle (+Unlimited), or order the paperback).

We're pretty sure you won't regret it!
