One of the best pieces of advice I was ever given was:
"Shut your mouth to save your life."
Sounds strange, doesn't it?
When I started learning about functional breathing, I discovered techniques like wim hof breathing, soma breathing and pranayama. Then I came across a TED Talk by Patrick McKeown, and everything started to make sense.
He explained why breathing through your nose should be your default.
πŸ‘ƒ Your nose warms, filters and humidifies the air before it reaches your lungs. 🫁 It helps your diaphragm work the way it's designed to. 🧠 It supports your nervous system, helping you feel calmer and more in control. πŸ’ͺ It can even improve your recovery after exercise.
I decided to test it for myself.
At the time, I was training by walking up and down 10 flights of stairs in my mum's high-rise flat.
I used to finish at the top gasping through my mouth, and it would take me 5–10 minutes to recover.
After watching Patrick's talk, I made one simple change...
I kept my mouth closed and breathed through my nose.
The difference was unbelievable.
Within about a minute, I'd recovered. My mouth wasn't dry, I felt calmer, and my breathing was under control.
From there, I started practising breath holds, nasal breathing throughout the day, and taping my mouth at night to encourage nasal breathing while I slept.
It genuinely changed my life.
If you're constantly stressed, always tired, snore, struggle with exercise, or simply want to breathe better and feel better...
Drop me a DM and let's have a chat about how functional breathing could help you too.
