SEO is a huge and constantly evolving area. Right now, it’s changing faster than ever because of AI, although many of the core fundamentals still remain the same.
I recently met the SEO team at John Lewis. One website. Twelve full-time people working across different areas of SEO alone.
Most SMEs cannot afford one full-time SEO specialist, let alone twelve. So they cannot compete by trying to do everything.
They compete by being commercially smart.
By focusing on sustainability rather than quick wins. By creating a genuinely good customer experience. By understanding their customers, analysing trends and data, building trust and clearly communicating what makes them different.
The businesses that will continue to perform well in search and AI-led discovery are the ones that feel authoritative, useful, human and trustworthy.
For SMEs, futureproofing visibility is not about chasing every new SEO trend or algorithm update. It’s about building a business and online presence that continues to earn trust, attention and conversions as search evolves.
SME SEO is not about covering every possible base. It’s about focusing on the areas that genuinely move the needle commercially.
