This lovely 82 year old client was struggling. After spinal surgery, the pain clinic had told her that pain killers were the only solution to her back pain. Yet 6 weeks on from the start of our training sessions, she is walking without a stick and no longer in pain. She has persevered with the exercises and advice I gave her.

Her goal was to be able to stay with her grandson (who only has an upstairs toilet which she couldn’t get to) and now she’s delighted that she can.

Writing older people off is a bad bad thing. With back pain, there is often a solution which doesn’t involve long term pain killers, you just need the determination to find it.

The one thing that’s key to solving your back pain is…breathing.The tight muscles around your injury site will stay that way, causing a continuation of pain and discomfort unless you can change how you breathe. Learning to trick the brain into relaxing those muscles alongside using your diaphragm, ribs and back muscles more fully are key elements in solving back pain.Try this: lie down with you knees bent. Place a hand on your ribs and as you breathe in, feel them expand as well as your back muscles. As you breathe out, feel the rib cage and back muscles relax. Try it for a few minutes, focusing on relaxing your back muscles on the out

You’ll still need to work on mobility and strength but breathing well is KEY.
