Christmas can be a time of high excitement, nervousness or anxiety. Interestingly, these are all characteristics of our high frequency Beta brainwaves. Brainwaves are simply electrical pulses passing between neurons in our brains, which in essence ‘communicate’ with each other.

As we are rushing around, buying the presents, food shopping, decorating the house, attending parties and ensuring all the kids are in the right places with the right outfits, so our busy beta waves are ensuring we are alert, attentive and mentally focused.
However, it is important to note that too much high frequency processing uses a huge amount of energy and can leave us feeling frazzled. Sound familiar?

Ever wondered why after a night of sleep you feel less concerned about yesterday’s events, even in reality nothing has changed? There’s a very good biological reason for this.

Say you have an argument with a partner or friend, and it really upsets you. That night whilst you sleep, your will brain carry out a process whereby it re-runs the events of the day, either in clear or in dreams, moving the event from your short term memory in to your brains mainframe. In doing so the raw emotional content is eliminated or diminished and it becomes simply a memory.

When you wake up the next morning you will still remember that argument, but you will probably be saying something like “why do I allow these people to upset me?”

So, it stands to reason that if you are not getting the recommended 8 hours sleep a night, you may find yourself more emotional than you would otherwise be.

Happy people affect not just your mood, but also your brain :)

We have what’s termed as “mirror neurons” which will fire and effectively mirror back the actions or behaviors of others, creating what neuro-science author Daniel Goleman describes as a feedback loop between our brains.

Surrounding ourselves with positive, happy people all the time, is of course not very practical or in fact desirable. But just think - if you maintain your positive perspective, the other person’s mirror neurons will then try to mirror yours.

Which I guess explains why “when your smiling, the whole world smiles with you!”

I love Christmas, but I know it can be quite a hectic and stressful time of year. My top tip for combatting 'Christmas Burnout' would be simply saying no, although difficult at first, believe me it does get easier.

Not overcommitting allows you time to slow down and reflect on all the positive aspects of your life and all the wonderful things to come in the year ahead. If you sat down and thought about it you'd be amazed by all you have achieved.

So, in the spirit of positivity, what made you smile this year and what are you most looking forward to next year?
