Lorraine Cookson Psychotherapist & Clinical Supervisor

Lorraine Cookson Psychotherapist & Clinical Supervisor Senior Accredited Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor offering online counselling & supervision I am a Professionally Accredited Member of the NCS.

I am qualified Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor offering online counselling and supervision. I specialise in counselling for:
Neurodivergent clients & their loved ones
Clients who have experienced trauma or difficulties in any part of their life
Clients who feel stuck or lost in their lives

You may be wondering if your issue or feelings are important enough to come to therapy for, th

e answer is absolutely yes. This is the most common thing I hear in my sessions and I want to reassure you that you are absolutely worthy of the time and space I offer. I am so sure that you will benefit from it. People do generally have the wrong idea about counselling, it is not the last thing you utilise when all else fails. It is so useful for any stage of needing support; from just working something out to working on deeply experienced trauma. I work in a really flexible way and I won’t tell you that you must attend weekly at the same time and day. When that idealised model of therapy was created people lived very different to the fast paced world we find ourselves in now. I can work with you to create a therapeutic relationship that supports and benefits you.

If Henry wrote a betrayal list … Therapist Mum edition!!!

Think I’m going to have to consider payment in treats before he officially complains! 😆🐾

🌿 Good supervision feels like exhaling.

It’s where you can bring the messy, uncertain, “I don’t know what I’m doing” parts of being a therapist and be met with care, curiosity, and skill.

Green flag supervisors challenge with compassion, and never confuse authority with superiority.

What’s been a green flag in your supervision experience? 🌿

🚩🚩🚩 Supervision shouldn’t feel like a performance review.

A good supervisor holds you with care, curiosity, and accountability, not criticism.

If you’re leaving supervision feeling judged, drained, or doubting yourself more than before, that’s a red flag.

Supervision is a collaborative process, not a power trip.

Have you ever experienced any of these? 👇

Following an inappropriate message just last night I thought I’d share some words that might be helpful to use if you are on the receiving end of the same.

It can be hard to know how to reply, especially when you may not always pick up on social signals in the same way or at the same speed as others - I get this.

But experience has taught me that if walks like 🦆 quacks like a 🦆 and swims like a 🦆, it’s probably a 🦆!

I’m old and cynical enough to not really be bothered by stuff like this but I know that some people are. And while it’s doesn’t really impact me in their desired way I find the emotional labour of having to tip toe around (usually) men’s egos exhausting.

The social conditioning to not insult (aka hold accountable) men or make them feel uncomfortable has warn off. I encourage you to not shrink or waver in your own life and business.

I always think, if I did get the wrong impression I can apologise & make amends & perhaps men will start holding each other accountable more.

This is not an anti man post by any means. It’s an honest, heartfelt reaction to yet another man with the audacity to expect my time and grace with inappropriateness in my DMs.

Save for later because better to have it & not need it than struggle to reply at the time!

I hope it helps & that you don’t have to use it 🙏🫶

Despite being a total beauty this boy has issues. Namely anxiety about people without dogs (thank you Covid 🙄). So today has mostly been about training him!

So I guess what I’m saying is on my off days I have Henry’s severe emotional dysregulation to manage & despite being really quite at it with humans I needed specialist support with this one!

After a few false starts we’ve finally found the right person to help us & he is making progress with the support of our wonder trainer Magda at Not only is she good with him but she’s also very good with us! (It’s always the owner that needs more training, right? 🤣)

It reminded me how sometimes we need specialist support, because none of us can know all things all the time. I was reminded of what it feels like to find & start with a new therapist, supervisor or private practice coach. It can feel daunting to find the right person to help you through life’s difficulties, but it’s so worth it in the end.

Sometimes posts find us right when we need them & if this feels like it for you, take note & act on it. 💫💫

Reach out to that professional you really need.

I’m always so grateful when someone takes the time to share their experience of working with me.

Behind every kind word isn’t lot of trust, honesty & hard work.

Thank you to those who’ve allowed me to walk alongside them for a while 💛

🚩🚩🚩 Therapy isn’t one size fits all, but some things are non negotiable.

You deserve to feel see, safe, and supported.

What would you add to this list?

I know so many therapists who doubt themselves and then I hear about what some other therapists have done 🚩

No one is perfect and that is totally okay, not every therapist will be right for you even if your bestie loved them, that’s okay too! But know that you do not have to put up with harm 🫶

(And of course stay tuned as the therapist green flags as well as supervisor green & red flags will be coming soon. Hit like, save, & share, then follow me)

October is ADHD Awareness Month and this year the theme is “The Many Faces of ADHD”.

Lots of medical research has centred male cis gendered whiteness, often without even realising. This has led to significant challenges for those who are othered from this centred position. If you are not the centred ‘norm’ how is it that people can understand how ADHD may show up for you?

If you are a therapist working with ADHDers with other marginalised identities, how do you ensure that you aren’t holding biases, learnt from society at large, towards them? How to you engage in actively anti-oppressive practice?
