For a long time I couldn’t understand something…

Why do so many people who were once confident, capable and strong suddenly find themselves feeling anxious, overwhelmed or stuck?

I started asking this question after noticing it in myself.

Years ago I could handle huge pressure and big decisions in senior roles. Then after a period of prolonged stress and trauma, something changed.

My capacity felt different and everything felt a whole lot heavier.

And I hear the same thing happening for so many of my clients.

People who used to cope well with life suddenly experiencing things like:

⚡ constant stress
⚡ anxiety & constant dread
⚡ emotional overwhelm & burnout
⚡ inability to switch off
⚡ loss of confidence
⚡ feeling disconnected from themselves

The advice you often hear is to “Just push through.” “Be more disciplined.” “Stay positive.”

But the more I’ve studied the nervous system, trauma and emotional regulation, the more I’ve realised something vitally important.

The problem isn’t just with mindset or motivation.

It’s with a nervous system that has been under stress for too long.

When the nervous system has been under prolonged stress or trauma (which 80% of the population will experience at least once in their lifetime), it can become dysregulated.

When that happens, it can affect:
🤯 your focus
🤯 your energy
🤯 your confidence
🤯 your emotional capacity
🤯 how you cope with everyday life

So, pushing harder rarely fixes it.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is pause, step back and help your body come back into regulation.

If any of this resonates with you, or you’ve been feeling stuck in stress, anxiety or overwhelm, feel free to reach out or send me a message.

You don’t have to figure it all out on your own ❤️

There has been a big shift in my thinking as of late.

For so long I thought that success meant pushing harder. Working long hours, carrying the weight of responsibility, always being available for everyone, pushing through the exhaustion because “that’s just what you have to do.”

And I’ve watched so many people live like this too.

Not just business owners or workplace professionals, but everyone. Juggling responsibilities, carrying emotional load, and trying to keep up with the constant pressures of modern life.

I hear it all the time:

The sleepless nights.
The constant tension in the body.
The headaches and brain fog.
The feeling of always being “on.”
The inability to truly switch off in the evening.

And I find myself asking…
Is this really how we want to be living our lives?

And more seriously… Is this really how we want our bodies to feel?

Because when your body stays in a constant state of pressure, your nervous system shifts into survival mode.

And when that happens:
• Your thinking becomes more reactive
• Your attention narrows
• Your patience drops
• Your energy becomes inconsistent

This isn’t a weakness. It’s your body’s way of trying to protect you.

This is why I believe the next evolution of health, performance and reaching our potential isn’t about forcing productivity or pushing through stress. It’s about expanding our inner capacity so we can handle the exact same pressures of life without our systems going into overload.

This is what nervous system regulation is all about. Learning how to work with your body and mind so you can feel calmer, think clearer and move through life with more energy and resilience.

For year I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t performing at the level I used to when I was younger.

Earlier in my career, working in the NHS and in senior HR roles, I was sharp, focused and resilient under pressure. I could handle complex situations, make clear decisions, and handle challenges easily.

Bust after losing my husband and choosing to leave employment to set up my own business something shifted.

I was still capable. Still experienced. Still driven. But my capacity to handle stress and challenge felt a whole lot heavier.

- My focus wasn’t the same
- My energy was inconsistent
- My emotional bandwidth felt smaller

I started to:
- Lose confidence
- Procrastinate
- Withdraw and disconnect
- Allow immense imposter syndrome to take over me

And I kept asking myself “Why does this feel harder than it used to?” with no real answer.

It wasn’t until recently when I began to understand the nervous system and how being in dysregulation significantly impacts performance that things clicked.

I realised my system had been living in a prolonged state of stress and survival for decades.

When your nervous system is dysregulated, your performance, focus and emotional regulation are all impacted

Oh right! So that was what I’d been dealing with for 15 years!

Learning how to regulate my nervous system, alongside mindset and identity work started to change everything on a scale I could never had imagined.

I’d finally found the answer!

And not only did I find the old me, I gained a lot of new me too!

This is now the foundation of my work.

Because when life hits hard, you don’t lose your capability.

You lose access to it when your nervous system is under prolonged stress.

For a long time, leadership development has focused almost entirely on skills, strategies and mindset.

Things like confidence, communication, decision-making and performance habits.

All of that is important, but what’s often missing is the foundation: the nervous system.

Many business owners and leaders are operating in a constant state of pressure.

The external world has become faster, more complex and more demanding, but the human nervous system hasn’t evolved to cope with this level of continuous threat and stimulation. So people end up living in chronic fight-or-flight without realising it.

When someone is in that state long-term, it affects everything:

– Their emotional regulation
– Their cognitive capacity (focus, clarity, problem-solving)
– Their relationships
– Their health
– And ultimately their performance

What’s interesting is that a lot of high performers assume that pushing harder is the answer.

But biologically, the more dysregulated the nervous system becomes, the more performance narrows. People become more reactive, less creative, more risk averse or more impulsive.

My work is about helping leaders and business owners move out of survival mode and into a regulated, high performance state.

I do this by combining nervous system regulation work with mindset work.

If someone is very dysregulated – stressed, burnt out, overwhelmed, emotionally reactive...

then we start with the body. We stabilise their nervous system so they feel safer, calmer and more grounded. Once that foundation is in place, mindset work becomes far more effective.

For others who are functioning well but feel blocked –

- Maybe by self-doubt,
- Limiting beliefs,
- Imposter syndrome
or limiting identity patterns

We still pay attention to nervous system regulation, but we can move more quickly into mindset and subconscious work to unlock higher levels of performance.

The end goal is not just stress management - although this is a part of the work we do.

It’s emotional self-leadership...

Leaders who can regulate themselves under pressure, think clearly in complex situations, lead people effectively, and perform at a high level without sacrificing their health.

In simple terms, I help driven people build the internal capacity to handle pressure and perform at their best – not by forcing more effort, but by working with how the human system actually functions.

I’ve been working with leaders and business owners for over 30 years now, and my passion has always been about what actually helps people perform well at work, not in theory, but in real life.

In the 1990s, I did this through HR policies, procedures, and performance frameworks.

That suited the control-and-command style of the time. It worked… until it didn’t.

In the 2000s, the focus shifted to SMART goals. That was a step forward.

Goals created clarity and direction - yet many capable managers still struggled to achieve them. Why?

Through experience, one thing became clear:

- effort and intention weren’t the problem.

Something essential was missing.

Over time - through trial, error, and working closely with leaders under pressure, I realised the missing piece was stress and nervous system regulation.

When a leader is overloaded, emotionally stretched, or constantly “on”, even the best goals and strategies fall short.

Focus narrows (usually on problems).
Emotions leak.
Confusion sets in.
Performance becomes inconsistent.

High performance isn’t just a skill or mindset issue - It’s a capacity issue.

When leaders learn how to regulate stress and expand their internal capacity to take on more, everything else starts to work better:

decision-making,
emotional intelligence,
performance,
and life outside of work.

This is the work I now focus on, and the area I continue to explore and refine with leaders every day.

If you’re curious to learn more about this approach, you can find more information here at www.rbleadership.co.uk to book in a complimentary consultation - let's get clear on where your stress and emotional regulation is at.

Most leaders I work with didn’t realise they were overloaded — they just thought this was what leadership felt like.

So they adapted.

They pushed through.
They normalised exhaustion.
They assumed feeling wired, irritable, foggy, or emotionally flat was the price of success.

The result?

A change in their emotional set point to a place of dysregulation!

I know this pattern well because I have been there myself and unfortunately working with the many leaders that I do, I see it all the time.

Not only does this stifle individual leadership performance it goes way beyond and impacts on team too.

The problem isn’t effort or commitment, most leaders have these in abundance.

It’s that their nervous system has been taking the hit while they've been pushing through and trying to figure out - 'what do I need to do to get past this?'

When stress becomes constant, it doesn’t usually explode - it quietly shows up as:

• Reduced emotional tolerance and a feeling of tightness, shame and tension
• Shorter fuse set off under the tiniest of pressures
• Difficulty switching off impacting on sleep
• Carrying work stress home and into family relationships

At that point the relationship with self and others starts to deteriorate and what's worse the set point moves into greater dysregulation.

But this can all be brought back to where it needs to be.

What actually creates change is nervous system education, learning the tools to regulate and practicing these in real time, so leaders can recover faster, think more clearly, and lead without running on empty.

And this work is never about getting it right first time. Everyone's nervous system is different and therefore a leader needs to play with and trial out what is right for them.

It’s about building capacity as you go,
adjusting and noticing what works,
and learning how to come back into balance more quickly each time.

For leaders who learn through experience, not just theory - this is the work that finally makes sense.

Where's your level of stress awareness at?

Are you pretending everything is ok when your mind and body are telling you something else?

Fed up of setting New Year business goals only for them to come to nothing?

That's because you've been sold a lie and have been focusing on completely the wrong tactics!

PREPARE YOUR MIND & BODY TO CREATE YOUR MOST EXTRAORDINARY 2026 and take a moment to pause and ask yourself: “Who Do I Need to Be?”

I'm so exited to be drawing on my many years of helping busy professionals identify and achieve goals - but this time around with a new twist...

Bringing in the psychology of goal setting and achievement in my December BECOMING THE YOU WHO ACHIEVES - THE WORKSHOP WITH A NEW MODEL FOR GOAL SUCCESS.

The lie we have been sold is to focus on what you need to do:
- Identify SMART goals
- Set deadlines
- Create a detailed action plan
- Focus on the end point to create your motivation

And whilst there is some use in some of these strategies, they will all come to nothing if you don't:

- pay attention to your goals in the right way
- have empowering thoughts about how you will achieve your goals
- have the right type of motivation to see your action plan through to a successful end
- already be in the identity of the person who already has all of your goals achieved

Goal setting and achievement starts from within and the biggest reason goal achievement fails is because too many of us are focusing on the outside - what we need to do rather than who we need to be.

My new model of goal setting and achievement takes you on a journey inwards, you will:

- understand the psychology behind setting the right goals for you and how to effortlessly achieve them

- find your intrinsic (internal) motivation linked to your goals which means you will no longer need to rely on force and willpower

- use powerful mindset, NLP and nervous system balancing tools and techniques so that your internal systems put you on an automatic path to goal success

- learn how to create and use the right thoughts and attention to help you focus on your goals correctly and to build momentum and energy

In addition to working through a detailed workbook and using powerful mindset and NLP transformational practices to bring in the right goals and the successful achievement of these, delegates will also:

- have access to a clean version of the workbook via our learning portal for unlimited future goal setting requirements

- have lifetime access to a recorded version of the training

- have access to all NLP and rewiring audios used at the workshop

allowing for this new model of goal setting and achievement to be used time and time again.
