Home Instead - Colchester

Home Instead - Colchester Home Instead provides tailor-made, flexible care at home for older adults to enable greater independence at home. Or even a trip out to the local pub!

Hi, my name is Julie and I am the owner of Home Instead Colchester. For quite some time, I had been looking to set up my own business and considered many different options. I then came across Home Instead Senior Care and really liked what they had to say about changing the face of ageing. Their whole ethos is about providing the highest quality care that will enable people to carry on living at ho

me as long as possible. I could really relate to this as I spent many years caring for my mother and was determined to keep her at home as long as possible. She suffered from osteoporosis, a heart condition and dementia and sadly, passed away in November 2010. My mother and I also looked after my father at home when he was dying from lung cancer. It was his one wish to die at home so between us we managed, and he got his wish. I feel really lucky and privileged to be part of such a fantastic organisation. It has given me the opportunity to run my own business whilst providing a quality service that I passionately believe in. What I also love about Home Instead Senior Care is in addition to providing a home help service and personal care service, we also offer a companionship service. To have a friendly face calling in to have a chat and reminisce about the past can make such a difference to someone’s life. These are just two very small examples of the companionship service but either one of them can really make a difference! The Colchester Home Instead Senior Care Office is part of a global network of more than 900 locally owned and operated offices. For details of our price range, please contact the office on 01206 848427 or email [email protected]

Heatwave: how to cope in hot weather
Many of us welcome hot weather, but when it's too hot, there are health risks. During heatwaves, more people than usual get seriously ill or die. When hot weather hits, make sure it does not harm you or anyone you know.

Why is a heatwave a problem?
The main risks posed by a heatwave are:

not drinking enough water (dehydration)
overheating, which can make symptoms worse for people who already have problems with their heart or breathing
heat exhaustion and heatstroke
Who's most at risk?
A heatwave can affect anyone, but some people are more vulnerable, including:

older people, especially those aged 65 and over
babies and young children aged 5 years and under
people who have serious long-term conditions – such as heart problems, breathing problems, dementia, diabetes, kidney disease, Parkinson's disease, mobility problems, mental health problems, or drug or alcohol addiction
people who live alone and may be unable to care for themselves
people who are on multiple medicines or medicines that may make them more likely to be badly affected by hot weather
people who are already ill and dehydrated (from diarrhoea and vomiting, for example)
people who are homeless, or who work or spend a lot of time outside, particularly if they're physically active, such as runners, cyclists and walkers
people whose jobs involve manual labour
Tips for coping in hot weather
Keep out of the heat if you can. If you have to go outside, stay in the shade especially between 11am and 3pm, wear sunscreen, a hat and light clothes, and avoid exercise or activity that makes you hotter.

Cool yourself down. Have cold food and regular cold drinks. Drink extra fluids but avoid alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks, and have a cool shower or put cool water on your skin or clothes.

Keep your living space cool. Close windows, curtains and blinds during the day and open them at night when the temperature outside has gone down. Electric fans can help if the temperature is below 35 degrees.

Check the temperature of rooms, especially where people at higher risk live and sleep, and make sure to check on anyone who is at higher risk from the heat.

Caring for a loved one isn’t always easy — and you don’t have to do it alone.

In fact, almost two-thirds of family carers say they wish they had more support.

The early signs that someone needs extra help can be easy to miss.

They are things like skipping meals, struggling to get around, or withdrawing from others. These might seem small at first, but can mean a lot.

When you’re caught up in the day-to-day, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed — and that’s where we come in.

If you're wondering what to do next, we’re here to guide you.

For practical advice on spotting the signs and finding the right support for you and your loved one, give us a call.
