I'm often asked this question and my list is only growing week by week of examples of everyday lives made easier because of the work of
Neurodevelopmental Therapy.

Reflex and Auditory integration are not simply plasters for challenges... they address the underlying physical factors that may be making life harder than it needs to be. If you'd like to find out if this kind of therapy would be a help to your child, please feel free to be in touch.

Map & Compass Neurodevelopmental Therapy offers a free 30 minute video consultation where you can ask questions, find out more and we can discuss if a programme with Map & Compass would be a good next step for your child.

Learning challenges are often described in terms of reading, writing, or concentration.

But for some children, those difficulties don’t start with learning itself.

They can be linked to how the body and nervous system have developed.

INPP’s work focuses on the role of early movement patterns, often referred to as primitive reflexes, and how these support a child’s neuromotor development. When these patterns are not fully integrated, everyday tasks in the classroom can require more effort than they should.

This might show up as difficulty sitting still, problems with coordination, or needing to work much harder to focus and keep up.

Over time, this added effort can affect confidence as well as learning.

Understanding the physical foundations of learning helps to explain why some children continue to struggle, even when they are trying their best.

Does your child find ball games impossible, no matter how much they practise?

It’s not always about co-ordination or effort – sometimes the issue lies with the way the eyes work together.

Convergence and accommodation are the skills that allow the eyes to focus on moving objects and switch between distances. If these aren’t fully developed, children can struggle with catching, throwing, or tracking a ball – and the same skills affect reading and writing too.

With the right support, these challenges can be identified and improved, helping children feel more capable and less frustrated.

In studies exploring the link between rhythm and reading, researchers noticed some patterns in children who later found reading more challenging.

Some children had difficulty repeating a rhythm accurately. Others struggled to start a beat at the right moment, keep a steady tempo, or notice when a rhythm changed.

On their own, these things do not mean there is a problem. Children develop at different speeds and many simply need more time or practice.

However, rhythm activities can sometimes offer helpful insight into how the brain is processing sound and timing. These are important building blocks for listening, language and reading.

This is one of the reasons music and movement activities are often used in developmental approaches. They allow us to observe how different parts of the brain are working together while also supporting those systems to develop.

If you feel there must be a way forward for your child, but you don’t know where to start, the weight of that uncertainty can be overwhelming. Often, families have already tried various supports and interventions, yet find themselves wondering: “What are we missing?”

At Map & Compass, we look at development through a specialised neuro-developmental lens to identify foundational gaps in development that may be hindering progress.

The Bottom-Up Approach ⬆️

We look at the foundations of the nervous system and determine if there are areas of development that can be given a “second chance.” By addressing neuromotor immaturity and auditory processing challenges, we create individually designed programmes that support the brain’s neuroplasticity (its ability to change), allowing the brain and body to work together more efficiently and in line with optimal patterns of development.
When these gaps in the foundations are strengthened, the brain doesn’t have to work as hard just to manage everyday tasks. This ensures the child's “neurological cup” is not in a constant state of overflow, making life feel easier and less overwhelming for them.

Specialist Support on the Causeway Coast 📍

Map & Compass is a specialised practice led by Tori Sheppard, a qualified INPP Licentiate, Johansen IAS, and RGM practitioner,

The work focuses on:
✨ Reflex Integration: Addressing physical factors underlying learning, attention, anxiety, emotional and sensory regulation, and coordination.
✨ Auditory Processing: Supporting how the brain processes what the ears hear, which can affect areas of attention, speech/language, behaviour, and coordination.
✨ Bi-lateral Integration: Strengthening the brain-body connection.
✨ Specialist Educational & Learning Advice: Navigating the path to academic progress.

Our mission is to help families find the most productive direction. We are here to help you set a course towards HOPE.

Is your child struggling to copy from the board, read smoothly, or keep up with writing tasks?

The same visual skills used for catching a ball are also key for schoolwork.

Skills like convergence and accommodation help the eyes switch focus between near and far objects. When these don’t develop as expected, children can find everyday tasks like reading, writing, or copying from the board much harder than their peers.

The good news is that these skills can be supported through gentle assessment and targeted exercises – helping children feel more confident both in the classroom and on the playground.

If you'd like to find out more please just get in touch.
