It's been 10 years since I noticed my bleeds change and welcomed in the beginning of perimenopause - a major life transition that I feel is nearing its end as I feel my endocrine and nervous systems finally stabilising.
Like for so many of us, it has been a ride!
But with my misguided maidenhood years squandered, my chaotic motherhood years too erratic to birth new life, I set my heart on having a positive menopause chapter!
In the beginning I gave myself a full year to consciously navigate it, I followed my body. The physical symptoms were intense but not the whole story, as our culture would have us believe. I also went through intense emotional and spiritual shifts - and now in hindsight, they feel like the most important aspects and the part of menopause that really did change my life.
Yes, it can be really hard, debilitating at times, like the end of the world has arrived when we least expected it...AND menopause is one of the most powerful times in our lives!
There's an indigenous saying...
"At menarche, a woman meets her power,
Through motherhood, a woman practices her power,
With menopause, a woman becomes her power."
There is so much help and conversation about the physical symptoms. But what about the psycho-spiritual transition? The emotional journey of menopause?
When we approach menopause as an initiation into true power and purpose, then life really does become magical. We're called to be brave, be prepared to make changes in our lives, and know that there is no quick fix. When we answer that call, we are ultimately rewarded.
10 years on I'm reflecting back - it wasn't all hard and I'm loving this phase of life - there has been vision and clarity, creative flow, sacred connection, and deep healing. Our menopause chapter really is a time for magic and medicine.
If you're navigating yours now and could do with some help, I've woven my insights and experiences (plus my training in psychotherapy) into a 3-day retreat which I'm running 12-14 June in Lancaster.
It's called The Wisewoman Way, and will give you a map of the emotional and spiritual terrain of menopause, plus a held space to explore some of the feelings that may be surfacing...all in a small supportive group of max 12 women. I ran it last year and it was a beautiful, powerful and deeply supportive weekend.
Early bird price only £295 till 30th April.
Payment plan available.
