Behind every great care service are people who truly understand what it means to care.

This National Carers Week, Kelly Lewis shares her experience of caring both at work and at home.

I began my journey in the care sector after supporting my nan, who lived with both dementia and Huntington’s disease. During that time, I discovered a deep sense of comfort and purpose in caring for another person, which inspired me to pursue a career in care.

In 2002, I started working in a care home as a Care Assistant. Over the next 11 years, I developed my skills, knowledge, and confidence, eventually becoming part of the management team. This role allowed me to grow both professionally and personally, while making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

In 2014, my mum was also diagnosed with dementia. I found myself balancing my professional responsibilities at work, caring for her at home, while still trying to maintain a social life. Like many people in similar situations, it was incredibly challenging and, at times, exhausting—but it was also something I wouldn’t have changed for anything.

In 2022, I decided it was time for a new chapter. I still wanted to support and help others, and this led me to become a Care Co-ordinator with Barclay Specialist Care. Since making that transition, I have never looked back.

National Carers Week – Meet Ellie, our new Rapid Support Worker, who shares her experience of working in care and her journey so far with Barclay Specialist Care Ltd.

Beginning my journey with Barclay Specialist Care has been an eye-opening experience in providing complex care, and it genuinely feels like I’ve joined a team I was meant to be part of. Their approach to training has allowed me to focus on the areas where I needed to build confidence, while also making use of the skills and knowledge I already had — tailoring the learning experience to my individual pace and needs.

From the beginning, the team has been incredibly welcoming and supportive, valuing the previous experiences I bring. No matter their role, every member of the wider team contributes unique knowledge, skills, and personality to ensure each client receives compassionate, person-centred care.

Training as a Nursing Associate has been a life-changing experience. Not only did it help me develop a deeper understanding of patients, the profession, and the clinical skills required, but it also helped me grow personally. I developed valuable life skills and strengthened my emotional intelligence, all of which have shaped me into the professional I am today and will continue to influence my career moving forward.

Barclay Specialist Care have continued to support and guide me through the next stages of my career, advocating for safe practice within my scope, encouraging me to keep my skills up to date, and providing opportunities for further learning and development.

This month is Effective Communication Awareness Month. Here is what our Communication Champion has to say on what effective communication means to her.

Everything Is Just a Conversation:

In my work, I’ve learned one simple truth: great communication changes everything. Tension eases. Problems shrink. People open up.

Even the toughest situations become manageable when we stop reacting and start talking. My favourite saying sums it up perfectly: “Everything is just a conversation.” Because it is! - A performance issue. - A misunderstanding. - A moment of conflict. - A difficult truth that needs to be said with care.

When we communicate well — with clarity, curiosity and compassion — we create space for solutions, not stand-offs. We build trust. We move forward. We make work (and life) easier for everyone involved.

Today, Claire Smith, our Menopause Champion, hosted her very first Menopause Support Forum — and what a fantastic success it was!

The session provided a safe and supportive space for open conversations, with lots of valuable information shared and meaningful discussions taking place.

We’re proud to take positive steps in supporting wellbeing and raising awareness around menopause in the workplace. Well done to Claire for leading such an important initiative!

Barclay Specialist Care Ltd are delighted to celebrate Orla Mullen following a fantastic 2025/2026 season with Peterborough United U18 Women's Team 💙

Orla played a key role in a brilliant team campaign, helping the squad secure an impressive 3rd place finish in the JPL Warriors Red League 👏

The highlight of the season saw the team go on an incredible run to the JPL Warriors Cup Final, beating higher-level opposition along the way before finishing as runners-up after a hard-fought final.

Capping off a brilliant season Orla has been retained for the 2026/2027 season🙌 A fantastic and well-deserved achievement that shows her hard work and dedication.

We’re also proud to confirm that Barclay Specialist Care Ltd will be continuing our support of Orla next season 🤝
