Since Iāve been a mum of two for over a year now, Iād thought Iād leave my review on what itās like having two children, with your first having Rett syndrome.
Iāve never seen anyone talk about how refreshing it can be having a second child after your first being severely disabled, itās like you finally get to experience ānormalā side of parenting even though Iām still experiencing being a parent carer as well (both are beautiful and hard in their own way).
I sometimes feel like a new mum all over again, Iām getting firsts I never got with Poppy, for example seeing an 8 month old baby crawl and Lottie taking her first steps before her 1st birthday! Iām incredibly lucky I still got to see these first, but they were at a later age with Poppy and whilst they were happening I was consumed with fighting and advocating for her. Seeing all of these milestones being hit by my second baby are never just happy moments, what follows the happiness is a punch in the gut, reality sets in because this shouldnāt be the first time Iām seeing this stuff.
Please donāt think Iām not seeing the sibling rivalry, because it still happens disability or not in our home. Poppy pulls Lottieās hair (although itās sometimes because itās just so fluffy and Poppy does love texture), Poppy puts things in front of Lottie for her to grab even though sheās just been told theyāre not for her 𤣠Lottie takes Poppyās dummy out of her mouth all of the time, the best one is that when my backs turned Poppy tries to take Lottieās food. But alongside this you see two sisters that love eachother so much, they lay in bed together just staring at eachother and Poppy will always be wearing a huge smile and gets so excited! They wake up in the morning and they love seeing eachother, they have eachother when theyāre bored. Lottie has encouraged Poppy to be more interactive with toys which is amazing!
The first 6 months were hell, we had a new baby and a house move and Poppyās behaviour we struggled with massively and at some points I definitely thought Iād bitten off more than I could chew! But we are out the other side, sheās realised that Lottie is pretty cool and she can stay (she didnāt have a choice š¤£) but you can see their bond growing each day.
