Parents sometimes feel unsure about getting involved in Speech & Language Therapy sessions, however, the science says your presence is actually the ultimate secret weapon.

I am lucky enough to have spent time recently reviewing some of this research which shows that when parents actively participate in sessions, it helps children to progress 🤩

Here’s are some of the reason’s why:

* You Know Them Best: As SLTs we know the theory, but you know what makes your child tick. Together, we can tailor the goals perfectly.

* Crushing the time limit: Therapy is usually around 1 hour a week. By watching the strategies firsthand, you learn how to turn everyday routines (like hair brushing or meals) into language lessons.

💡 The Bottom Line: You don't need to be a therapist; you just need to be a partner. When parents and SLTs team up, children thrive.

Next time you head into a session pull up a chair!

Such an important point….. “Every September is a transition. Every child walks into a classroom where expectations have shifted, routines have changed and relationships are starting from the beginning again. For many children that's an exciting part of growing up. For others, particularly those with speech, language and communication needs, it's a period that deserves just as much thought and preparation as any move between phases of education”

Every September, children begin learning in a new classroom, but they're not the only ones adjusting. This article explores why the relationships teachers build over time may be one of the most important parts of a successful transition.

☀️ Working over the school holidays!

Since taking the leap into independent practice at the beginning of the year, it’s fair to say it’s been a whirlwind of a term.

I’ll be taking things a bit slower over the summer holidays but I will be opening up select appointment slots on Tuesdays throughout the holidays.

Staying consistent over the summer is a fantastic way to keep building on those communication wins!

Alternatively, if you are already looking ahead to the new school year and want to chat about support for September, now is the perfect time to get in touch.

📅 Spaces are limited. Drop me a message or get in touch today to book a Tuesday holiday slot or to map out a plan for September!

This is a really hot topic at the moment and if this is something you are currently trying to navigate remember, as Speech and Language UK point out:

Many children have long-term speech and language challenges that are not caused by screen use, or by anything a parent has or hasn’t done.

Communication Doesn’t Just Happen—It Needs Space to Grow! 💬🌱

Ever feel like you’re doing all the talking? Sometimes, the best way to help a child is to build in silence.

By intentionally structuring your routine to ‘create opportunities’ you are encouraging your child to communicate with you.

Here are some ideas to create more opportunities for interaction today:

Offer a Little, Then Wait: Give one block or blow one bubble. Wait for them to ask for "more" via a look, a gesture, or a word before giving the next one. 🫧

• Sing & Stop: Pause at the end of a familiar line (e.g., "Round & round the garden ...") and let them fill in the blank or give you an excited look! 🌟

• Ready, Steady... [PAUSE]: Build anticipation during physical play. Wait for a sound or a wiggle before you finally say "GO!" 🚙

• The "Silly" Surprise: Put your coat on backward or hide a sock in the toy box. When they notice the mistake, use it as a moment to model new words. 🧦😲

• Follow the Lead: Join their world. If they’re lining up dinosaurs, line them up too!Connection precedes communication. 🦖

The Golden Rule: Keep it fun! If they get frustrated, step in and help. The goal is connection, not a test.

Which of these are you going to try today?
