Community champion Kuia from our Belvedere store has fought breast cancer twice so knows how difficult it can be for people to talk about their own diagnosis and treatment – which is why she's always ready to be a listening ear and a friendly face to chat to.

She's a passionate supporter of our Tickled Pink breast cancer campaign which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. In that time Tickled Pink has raised £100 million to change the outcomes of breast cancer in the UK, working with charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!.

Kuia said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and the progress which has been achieved over the past 30 years is remarkable. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer the first time at the age of 28 I was just given a leaflet, and that's it. I didn't know anyone my age who'd had breast cancer and I never knew success stories either. Some people couldn't even say the word cancer, they'd cross the street to avoid me. People even thought it was contagious! Now there's support networks and groups out there and you can contact nurses online. Access to information is a lot easier and there are new remedies and treatments too.

"I'm very open about having had breast cancer. In my job I meet a lot of people who have been diagnosed and are scared. Everybody's journey is different, but it's nice sometimes to see somebody who has got through the other side. I'm very open about what I've been through and I do a lot of awareness stands for Tickled Pink which involve talking to customers and handing out leaflets. Sometimes people just want to talk to someone about their diagnosis and they are in a bit of shock."

18/10/2026

Helping a mum who gave birth in the car park of our Ipswich store inspired our colleague Charmaine to train as a midwife – and after three years at university, including placements at Ipswich Hospital and helping with 40 births – she's now fully qualified.

Charmaine said: "I was just going home and walking across the car park with a colleague when we heard what was going on and went over to help. The dad had just taken the baby and put it on mum. We rang the ambulance and got towels for the baby and waited for the ambulance to come. It was just a beautiful moment."

Charmaine has worked at Asda alongside her studies. She's looking for midwife opportunities, but hasn't ruled continuing in a part-time capacity with Asda. She said: "I sometimes see ladies who I've helped deliver their babies out shopping in Asda and they say to me 'hi, what are you doing here?' Working in the hospital and Asda was such a contrast though. I'd be delivering babies one day and then stacking shelves the next. Everyone at the store is very friendly and they've been very accommodating and supportive of me when I've been studying. It's been really lovely. Customers are really nice too and they know all about my studying."

Robert, the store's produce manager, said: “I’m so proud of Charmaine for balancing her work alongside her midwife course. It’s not easy managing both, and the effort she’s put into it deserves recognition. It’s great to see her working towards something she’s passionate about and I wish her all the best in the future."

As part of the marketing team at Asda, Katie has been helping raise awareness of our Tickled Pink breast cancer charity campaign for the last 18 years – and she says its messages of regularly checking yourself and knowing what to look for were critical when she got her own breast cancer diagnosis.

Katie used a guide from Tickled Pink charity partner CoppaFeel! to make sure she was properly checking her breasts. And when she felt a lump during one of her routine checks in September 2024 she knew she needed to get it looked at. She said: "Because I’ve been involved in Tickled Pink throughout my time with Asda I was exposed to all the important messages, so was really good at regularly checking myself and knew how to do it and what to look out for. I use the CoppaFeel! infographic showing how to check properly, including under the armpits. That was crucial because I had such a good routine and good rigour. That’s why I had noticed that change and was able to monitor that. Even before my diagnosis, Tickled Pink added value to my life because I knew to be vigilant."

And after her diagnosis, support from Tickled Pink charity partner Breast Cancer Now made a huge difference: "One of the first things they gave me after my diagnosis was from Breast Cancer Now with all of the terms I was likely to hear and information on what to expect. That gave me a lot of comfort and hope and I felt quite positive going into my treatment. I used the Breast Cancer Now forum during my treatment and met ladies who were in a similar position to me. You feel lonely and like you are the only person in the world going through it, but the forum helped me get through it. And after I had finished my treatment I did the Moving Forward course which is funded by money raised by Tickled Pink. You work out your plan, talk about how you feel, what a new normal might look like and how to find your place in the world again."

Katie returned to work in February and is using her experience, and her marketing expertise, to help other women in a similar situation. She uses her Instagram account to document her experience. She's been directly involved with Tickled Pink this year, including the Kylie Minogue Tickled Pink T-shirt launch. She said: "It’s amazing to work on. When I came back into the business people were a bit reluctant to get me involved with Tickled Pink in case it was triggering for me, but I was like ‘let me at it!’ and couldn’t wait to get involved."

Asda customer Darren has a personal reason for supporting the 30th anniversary celebrations for Tickled Pink – he’s had breast cancer himself. 🎀

Darren said: "Being a being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen.”

13/10/2026

As part of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of our Tickled Pink breast cancer charity campaign Sam is taking on a "triple no ni**le challenge" to raise awareness and inspire people to check themselves.

At 19, Sam was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy to her chest. While the treatment saved her life, radiotherapy increased their risk of developing breast cancer later in life. She underwent a risk reduction double mastectomy in April 2025 and says that for her, it was the right decision. Now 32, she has tackled the London Marathon, Chase the Sun, a 205-mile cycle ride between sunrise and sunset, and a two-mile Swim Serpentine challenge in London – raising money for our charity partner CoppaFeel!. Sam took on all of her three challenges topless to start conversations, challenge perceptions and show that her body is strong and valid.

She said: "It's liberating! I'm doing them all topless to show off the scars. I want people to be able to advocate for themselves, go to the GP and, seeing my chest, think, 'I should probably check my chest, there's a bit of a lump, go get it checked out. I don't want to get scars like that.' I think it's beautiful, this survivor's body I live in and I'm really proud of it. But I know there'll be some people that feel differently, they might see that and go "I should get that little lump checked" and that's what I'm doing. I've lived through all that rubbish so that I can try and turn it into something good. I wanted to do something bold and brave and give people an opportunity to see it."

Sam also has a message for Asda customers: "Happy 30th birthday to Tickled Pink. What you guys have been doing over the years is amazing. I've been seeing that messaging since I was a kid and you know when Asda turns pink everybody knows about it. It's such a great platform to raise that awareness and raise that message and get people checking their chests and advocating for themselves and raising money for vital things like Breast Cancer Now and everything they do and CoppaFeel! and everything they do. So thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!"

"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

09/10/2026

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

09/10/2026

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

Throughout July, I have continued to focus on activities that bring people together to keep active!

Our Community Insight Tracker shows that being active helps to reduce isolation and improves mental wellbeing. This is why I have chosen to use my time to support local groups that encourage movement, celebrate achievements and create opportunities of connection across our community👏🏻🫂

On Saturday 18th July, I volunteered and took part in the Phoenix Running West Sussex 24-hour running event! Phoenix Running West Sussex is managed by Vernon, Joanne and their children, who are the most genuine and kind people that go above and beyond for their love for running events. They rely on volunteers to support their events, which is usually a 7-hour timeframe where you can personally choose what to run - from a 5k up to an ultramarathon! Not to mention, the medals are INCREDIBLE🏅👏🏻

For this specific event, they hosted a 24-hour running festival for the first time. They brought together members from our community including Simon Head, a runner with a gourmet burger truck who cooked amazing food for everyone, an amazing singer Terry Sumner who kindly sang between his laps, and overall an amazing community of people who come together to support each other🫂 I ran 32 Miles, 51.5km over the space of 13hours (16:00-05:00) - an ULTRAMARATHON!! - and I honestly couldn’t have done it without the support from everyone around me. I’ve never felt so proud to be part of a community - Seeing everyone pushing themselves to their max, but still cheering on and supporting everyone around them👏🏻🧡

Moving forward to Sunday 19th July, I donated my time to support the finishing aid station for the first ever Pound Hill Pounders running event, raising essential funds for Menshare Listening Group Crawley. This was a 10km and 10mile running event, ran by Paul Smith and Ali Fuller, from our free local running group (where I also volunteer as a Run Leader!) I provided fresh watermelon, cups of water, hydration drinks, sweet treats and salty pretzels as a reward for the finish line. This went down a treat with the runners, with lots of grateful and kind feedback! In total, they raised an amazing £350 to Menshare Listening Group👏🏻❤️

Events like these are so important to help reduce loneliness and isolation, and bring together our community to achieve amazing things. I NEVER thought I would run an ULTRA MARATHON, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the people that go above and beyond in our community for others🫶🏻

I was kindly reached out to by Clive from Sussex & Surrey Soapbox - SUSY radio 103.4 FM, kindly asking for a goods donation for a free family event they were planning called ‘Tess’ Tropical Tea Party - Unity in the community’ fundraising for Crawley Open House

This amazing event was put together by volunteers and groups in our local community, featuring dancers, magicians, live entertainment, kids activities, face painting, rock choir singers and many more. Everyone came together as one community, with over 400 attendees, to connect and have fun.

I worked hard to ensure we could support this event as much as possible. We provided a goods donation of food for the event, including burgers, sauces, salad, hotdogs, chicken nuggets and halal meat options, as well as some sweets for kids prizes🍬 Iqbal Khan and the team from Tess’ Kitchen kindly cooked all of this food at the event, giving out to our community for free👏🏻 Even the deputy leader from Reform UK WSCC was handing out burgers when the team needed support💪🏻I attended this event with my little family, representing Asda! Clive Hilton expressed his appreciation for the kindness of our donation on his Radio station SUSY 103.4 FM, where I spoke live on the radio and in an interview about what we do for our Community at Asda.Seeing all of our communities come together to put aside differences, connect, laugh, play and have so much fun was truly an experience I will never forget.– Deanna, Asda community champion

We supported Milton Mount Primary School with their Colour Run sports event, with over 400 children taking part!

I teamed up with our free local running club, Pound Hill Pounders, presenting a fun warm-up to all the different age group waves (including a SEN-friendly wave), then guiding them round the track where the teachers had a great time throwing clouds of paint!

Asda Crawley provided a goods donation of sweet treats to be given with a medal at the finish line🍬🏅

Being active helps reduce isolation and improves mental wellbeing - this is why we love to support local groups that encourage movement💪🏻 With it also being Mental Health Awareness Week, I couldn’t think of a better way to promote this by covering ourselves head to toe in the brightest colours🩷🧡💛💚🩵💜

We’ve also had amazing feedback from this event and grateful for Milton Mount Primary School for giving us the opportunity to take part - One comment from the public stating “I saw many a child leave school beaming ear to ear, accompanied by parents wondering how they will wash them down😂 Well done all, great event👏🏻”

Following our May focus of supporting families with essentials, we welcomed FreeShop Crawley into our foyer to host a Food Drive!

I took this time to create something new – an initiative to make it simpler for our customers to donate essential items by saving them time, a way to keep donations affordable, plus a way to work with FreeShop to give exactly what they need… A ‘Feed a Family Care Package for only £9.93’! Plus in each package, we included an extra 20% of food donated by Asda Crawley.

I created 10 Care Packages as a trial - our customers and FreeShop absolutely loved this initiative! We had great feedback, and they sold out within hours. Overall, FreeShop received almost 40 crates of food donations (plus the 10 care packages!) and this was an extremely successful day.
