As I drink my morning matcha it occurs to me that
It isn’t actually THAT easy to transition from blow drying & straightening every single day, to embracing curls.
There’s usually a frustration, a constant battling in different weather conditions, trying to keep your hair perfectly styled
Trying to fight the kink (oh that flipping kink!)
And one day you think “stuff it”
Your late for the school run so you think to yourself
“Ok, I’ll pop some mouse in it this morning & I’ll just deal with however it wants to go”
That day you are almost bombarded with compliments on your beautiful curls!
Literally everyone you bump into is like “look at your hair, it’s beautiful! I wish I had curls like that”
Thanks, but..
(That’s not fair, I’ve put no effort in & suddenly in getting all of these compliments, what’s that about?)
You don’t even get complimented on your best straight hair days, what’s going on?
You walk past mirrors & don’t recognise yourself.
It’s just odd.
Then you think to yourself that you haven’t asked the most important people in your life what they think?
Your children!! (You know your husband likes it whatever you do)
So here goes…..
“Kids, how do you prefer mummy’s hair, straight or curly?”
You don’t even have to wait for a response,
it’s instant & it’s unanimous!
CURLY!!!!
Your confused
You ask them “Why?”
And their response “because your less shouty when you have curly hair”
This confused me, and I didn’t actually ask them at the time, but,
I’m sure it’s because of the time that I had to spend blowdrying & straightening in the mornings, shouting over the hairdryer the dining room (I’m in the mirror, they were behind me pottering about getting ready)
“HAVE YOU BRUSHED YOUR TEETH?”
“HAVE YOU GOT YOUR BAG?”
“HAVE YOU GOT YOUR SOCKS & SHOES ON?”
That was it.
My children telling me that was the moment of realisation for me
& I have to say,
One of the best decisions I ever made.
Yes, if you haven’t guessed, this was MY PERSONAL story & my personal reason.
I now don’t panic if my hair is a bit wild, or not perfect
I actually prefer it a little bit wild!
I embrace it & I love it.
It’s who I am & I’m proud to be curly.
Now learning to actually understand my curls???
That’s a WHOLE other story!!
And one for another day.
I’m ready for another drink now.
Have you had your defining moment?
Share it with me/us
I’d love to hear your story ###
