✨ Meet Dawn Robson ✨

Dawn is a Chartered Practitioner Psychologist with HCPC registration and a member of the British Psychological Society. She has over 30 years experience supporting children and adults, specialising in psychological assessment. Her focus is on understanding complex presentations across mental health, neurodevelopmental differences, and forensic contexts. She aims to offer a clear, thoughtful assessment process that helps individuals and families feel understood and supported.

At Starjumpz, Dawn offers ADHD assessments for adults alongside post diagnostic support at our Crowborough and Brighton sites. Her assessments take a strengths-based and formulation driven approach.

💜 Autism is a spectrum 💜
There has been a lot of chatter in the media recently about autism diagnosis, from concerns about over-diagnosis, the rise in diagnosis in adulthood, and queries about how our definition of the autism spectrum is changing. We've put together a few our our own thoughts on this topic. Let's continue to champion awareness, acceptance, and understanding of all autistic experiences. 🌟

✨ New service alert! ✨ We are very excited to announce that we will be offering Adult ADHD Assessments from September onwards.

We have often been asked over the years by parents and families if we offer adult assessments, usually after watching their child's journey and the difference understanding can make. ❤️

This service will be offered by Dawn Robson, Chartered Practitioner Psychologist who has over 30 years experience in psychological assessments. She is highly experienced in understanding complex presentations, differential diagnoses, mental health, and neurodivergence. Our adult ADHD assessments comply with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). They can be conducted either face-to-face at our Centres in Crowborough and Brighton, or online, depending on personal preferences.

Jason was diagnosed with autism and global developmental delay at the age of 3. He learned to speak, read and write at later ages than expected but then went on to higher education and was appointed a professor at the University of Cambridge.

Jason’s story is a reminder that we all learn at a different pace, that perseverance and belief are powerful strengths, and that neurodivergent voices bring essential and much needed perspectives to our society. Jason’s story highlights that we should never let someone else’s expectations limit what we know we can achieve.

“So are they saying I’m just stupid then?” my 17 year old daughter asked as she watched Channel 4’s documentary ‘The Great ADHD myth?’ with me last night. A title created to draw you in and make you question. It certainly did raise questions:
o “do they think I’m making this up?”
o “don’t you think I would have done better in my exams if I just could?”
o “why can’t I just do the things that other people are doing then?”
o “do they think it is fun to think like this?”
o “why can’t I make myself do the things I want to then?”.

It certainly raised a lot of emotions that can be seen within the media and social media last night and today (as well as in my own living room)! There are a lot of frustrated, angry, confused, invalidated and upset people.

ADHD is not a myth or a social construct. It is a highly researched and evidenced neurodevelopmental condition.

The questions that it should be better raising are around availability of assessments, consistency of diagnosis, the recommendation and availability of first line alternatives to medication, ongoing supplemental strategies to support medication, training of school staff, and provision of support in schools for children and young people who learn differently.

💜 "It's like witchcraft."

A parent once said this to me after seeing the progress their son was making in Occupational Therapy and Sensory Integration Sessions. They were joking (mostly 😉), but I knew exactly what they meant.

When a child who has struggled to engage, regulate, communicate or participate begins to thrive, it can seem almost magical.

But the secret isn't magic. It's understanding and support.

When we stop asking "What's wrong?" and start asking "What is this child telling us?" things begin to shift.

The child doesn't change into someone else. They gain the support, understanding and opportunities they need to be themselves.

So no, Occupational Therapy isn't witchcraft.....although sometimes it can look that way from the outside. 🪄💜

We're pleased to share this post from SEDSConnective, highlighting the growing recognition of the links between hypermobility and neurodivergence. 💜

This important connection was a key theme in our recent hypermobility event, and we're passionate about helping families, professionals and individuals better understand how physical wellbeing, sensory processing, learning and mental wellbeing can intersect.

Thank you to SEDSConnective for continuing to raise awareness and provide valuable education and resources in this area.

For many years, the connection between and was misunderstood or dismissed. Today, we are working to change that - helping individuals, families, professionals, and services better understand the strong links between physical and mental wellbeing!

✨ What an incredible evening! ✨
A huge thank you to Dr Georgie Siggers and Olivia Luke for sharing their expertise, and to everyone who joined us live, asked such thoughtful questions, and contributed to the discussion.

Our session, "Hypermobility & Neurodiversity: Understanding the Connection," explored an often-overlooked aspect of neurodivergent wellbeing, covering everything from the links between hypermobility, autism and ADHD, to motor skills, fatigue, emotional wellbeing, autonomic regulation, POTS, and the fascinating concept of the "Bendy Brain."

The feedback has been amazing, and we hope the session provided valuable insights, practical understanding, and plenty of those "that makes so much sense!" moments. 💜
