Colic is the leading cause of emergency vet call-outs — and a major cause of premature death in horses. Can we reduce the risk?

🌾 Forage matters. Changing hay/forage is the single biggest factor associated with increased colic risk. Changing feeds and not providing access to forage (in field and stable) also associated with increased risk.

🌿 Introduce new feeds or forage gradually over 7–14 days and keep an eye on how your horse responds. Ensure sure your horses are not left without forage.

🪱 High worm burden and recent treatment with wormer increases colic risk.

☀️ Keep an eye on the weather. Weather changes and grass flushes can also increase risk.

⚠️ Multiple factors will increase risk (e.g. hay change + feed changes+ weather change + no grass/forage = big increase in colic risk)

🔬 Don’t just guess what’s happening in the gut.

Meet the Team! (Part 2)

Jess, AlvuSana's Science and Tech Lead, holds a PhD from the University of Manchester, an MRes in Clinical Sciences and a BSc in Equine Science. Her background spans the animal health industry, clinical sciences and applied horse management. Her doctoral research focused on validating and applying markers of gut health in domestic and semi-feral equids. Her interest in equine gut health grew from years of experience in equine nutrition, particularly supporting horses with complex digestive and health needs.

When not working, Jess enjoys walking, taking her dog to BarnHunt and playing with her two native ponies.

Susanne, one of AlvuSana's directors, is also a professor at the University of Manchester. She previously held a Royal Society Fellowship at Oxford University after receiving her PhD from the University of Liverpool. She has published more than 120 articles on the conservation, behavioural ecology and physiology of >20 species across six continents. She is also an active member of the IUCN Equid specialist group and works on wild equids around the world. Her passion for equine gut health stems from a past of competitive showjumping, equitation and working hunters in Southern California.

​​Her research still takes her to beautiful conservation dependent landscapes around the world. When not working, Susanne enjoys outdoor sports, including riding, hill walking, skiing and climbing, at a much gentler pace than in the past.

Consistency matters. In training, in management and in parasite control.

Parasite egg shedding often peaks in early autumn after the warm summer. Managing parasite levels at this time of year can protect horses before the cold winter months arrive.

Faecal egg counts (FECs) identify horses shedding higher levels of strongyle eggs. Indiscriminate worming is not good for horses' guts and can also lead to anthelmintic resistance. Targeted worming can help focus efforts on those that need extra support.

Current CANTER guidance recommends a risk-based approach that uses monitoring tools such as FECs to help determine which horses require treatment.

We're looking for a Laboratory Technician to join our growing team at Alvusana, based at our laboratory in Daresbury. Alvusana is an innovative equine biotechnology company built on years of pioneering research at the University of Manchester. As we expand our commercial testing services, we're looking for someone who wants to grow with us and help bring cutting-edge science to the equine industry.

🔬 What you'll be doing
You'll play a key role in our laboratory by:
*Processing horse faecal samples and preparing them for analysis
*Performing immunological and biochemical assays to measure gut health and inflammation
*Ensuring samples are handled correctly from receipt through to testing
*Maintaining accurate laboratory records
*Helping deliver reliable, high-quality results for our customers

🌟 We're looking for someone who is:
* Reliable, organised and conscientious
* Self-motivated and able to work independently, while also enjoying being part of a small team
* Interested in biology, equine science, animal health or nutrition
*Keen to learn and contribute to a fast-growing biotech company

✅ Experience:
*Previous laboratory experience is an advantage but not essential
*Experience handling horses would be beneficial but is not essential
