You crawl out of the gym drenched in sweat.
Breathing heavy.
Legs shaking.

It feels productive. It feels like progress.

But that feeling of exhaustion is not a performance metric.

A lot of people will confuse intensity with effectiveness. If every session that you do leaves you feeling f**ked, thatโ€™s not discipline, itโ€™s poor planning.

Take a look at your weekโ€ฆ

If itโ€™s hard lift, hard intervals, hard conditioning, and repeating, thatโ€™s not a structured program. Thatโ€™s just accumulating stress and hoping your body is able to figure it out.

When everything is high intensity, nothing stands out.

Thereโ€™s no contrast. No progression. No strategy.

Just fatigue on top of fatigue.

Your body doesnโ€™t adapt to chaos and inconsistency. It adapts to clear, repeatable signals.

Your performance will improve when your training has intention:

Aerobic work that actually builds capacity instead of draining it.
Threshold sessions that expand what you can sustain.
Strength work that progresses week to week and not workout to workout.

Hereโ€™s what golfers should (and shouldnโ€™t) be doing in the gymโ€ฆ..

Do โœ…

- Follow the plan. Itโ€™s there for a reason and progressing it is where you will see positive adaptions.
- Lift weights. Doing so will help you get stronger, leading to more distance, a more robust golf swing and the reduced risk of injury.
- Jump, throw, slam and rotate with maximum intensity to make sure youโ€™re getting the most from those movements.
- Work on your mobilityโ€ฆbut donโ€™t forgot about your strength and power work.
- Prioritise compound movements (squats, deadlifts, rows). These will give you the foundations to progress all other areas of your training.
- Do it for yourself.

Donโ€™t โŒ

- Be afraid to perform heavy lifts. Getting strong is a must!
- Donโ€™t make the mistake in thinking that all of the exercises you do should all look like a part of your golf swing. A lot of them will look fancy, but a lot of golfers just simply need to get stronger first.
- Donโ€™t skip lower body exercises. The force that your body creates starts from the ground!
- Donโ€™t think the ONLY key to improving your golf game is flexibility.
- Donโ€™t train like a bodybuilder. Train to be more athletic.

When I first started training, I thought every session had to be about pushing harder, pushing until I hated it, and chasing the feeling of being โ€œsoreโ€ after every workout.

Too many people treat training like a box to tick off a to-do listโ€ฆ

something that they โ€œhave toโ€ get through.

If every session feels like a chore, it wonโ€™t last very long.

Training should be something you look forward to.

It should challenge you, but it should also energize you, give you confidence, and leave you wanting more.

When you enjoy the processโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ”นConsistency stops being a struggle.
๐Ÿ”นProgress happens naturally.
๐Ÿ”นTraining becomes part of your life, not just a short-term plan.

Fitness shouldnโ€™t be seen as punishment.

If an exercise causes discomfort or pain, we donโ€™t ignore it, we modify. Whether thatโ€™s down to previous injuries, joint limitations, or mobility issues, we work around it while building strength where it matters most. Long-term progress comes from staying pain free and consistent.

Not everyone walks into the gym ready to deadlift or do pull-upsโ€”and thatโ€™s perfectly okay. Iโ€™ll assess what movements you can do well right now, and build from there. Itโ€™s all about safe progression and mastering the basics before layering on more.

Start from the ground up.

A lot of golfers think more distance comes from swinging harder with the arms.

Most speed actually starts from the ground.

Your legs create force.
Your hips help transfer it.
Then the club gets delivered through the ball.

If you canโ€™t use the ground well or produce force properly, you end up trying to make up for it with effort. Thatโ€™s why a lot of golfers feel like they have to swing out of their shoes just to gain a few extra yards.

Look at someone like Rory McIlroyโ€ฆ

Obviously his technique is unbelievable, but heโ€™s also incredibly athletic. Strong legs, powerful rotation, stable through impact.

And this doesnโ€™t just apply for tour pros either.

You donโ€™t need access to fancy equipment or 5 gym sessions a week to benefit from training. Even just getting stronger, moving better, and improving your rotational power can make a noticeable difference to your game.

As you get stronger, start to move better, and become more powerful, you should start to see these things improvingโ€ฆ

โ€ข Better clubhead speed
โ€ข More stability in the swing
โ€ข Less stress on the lower back
โ€ข Feeling more balanced and athletic over the ball

Most golfers spend years chasing swing changes when sometimes the body is the thing holding them back.

You donโ€™t have to follow bodybuilding style programs.

You just need training that actually helps the way you move and swing.
