π let's get back to basics and start baking your own bread.
You can change the recipe to suit your taste and change ingredients if you have an intolerance . οΏΌ
This Bread-in-a-Bag is such a fun little baking project, especially if the kids are home for summer and you need something hands-on that does not require a whole craft-store situation.
The whole idea is simple: mix the dough in a bag, squish it around, let it rise, and bake a simple homemade loaf without turning the kitchen into a flour-covered disaster zone.
What You Need
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 packet active dry yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup warm water
2 tablespoons oil or melted butter
Method
1. Add 1 cup of the flour, the yeast, sugar, and salt to a large zip-top bag or large food-grade silicone bag.
2. Pour in the warm water and oil or melted butter.
3. The water should be warm, not hot. Aim for about 100Β°F to 110Β°F / 38Β°C to 43Β°C. If the water is too hot, it can kill the yeast and the bread may not rise.
4. Seal the bag and squish everything together until it is well mixed.
5. Add the remaining flour a little at a time, sealing the bag and gently kneading after each addition, until a soft dough forms. The dough should be soft and slightly tacky, but not soupy or overly sticky.
6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a loaf.
7. Place the dough in a greased loaf pan or on a baking sheet.
8. Cover and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, usually about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
9. Bake at 375Β°F / 190Β°C for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
10. Let it cool slightly before slicing.
Notes
The bag method is just for fun and easy cleanup. If plastic bags are not your thing, you can always use a regular mixing bowl. Completely your preference.
A neutral oil, like vegetable or canola oil, will keep the bread soft without adding much flavor. Olive oil can be used too, but it may give the bread a slightly stronger flavor. Melted butter adds a richer taste, but let it cool slightly before adding it so it does not get too hot for the yeast.
Either active dry yeast or instant yeast will work fine. Since the warm water is added into the bag with the yeast, just make sure it is warm water, not hot, so the yeast can do its job.
