Distractions are all around us, we can't avoid them on or off the mat.

But that doesn't make your daily yoga practice any less important.

The distractions actually add to a yoga practice both on and off the mat.

They help us be more present when life lifes.

We can't always have a practice in a distraction free silent space, retreat or studio every day, as blissful as that might sound.

The distractions add to our daily practice by reminding us of the Niyama of 'Tapas', self-discipline, austerity, and perseverance.

Tapas from the Sanskrit "tap," meaning "to burn" or "to create heat,".

It refers to the inner fire that fuels self-discipline and commitment to positive change.

Celebrate the sun, abundance, vitality and your inner fire today on the Summer solstice.

Start with Surya mudra, connect to the vitality of your body and energy. Feel the life force energy of the sun.

Surya mudra - tucking your ring fingers to the base of your thumb and folding your thumbs over to connect with your ring fingers.

Honour your inner fire and vitality by connecting with your core and your solar plexus chakra, just above your navel space.

Perhaps imaging that fire in your belly.

Feel your breath bellowing the embers of the fire in your belly.

As you take each inhale see the embers grow, as you exhale internalise the sound RAM and the colour yellow radiating☀️

Rest is a biological need, like drinking water, but we don't give it the necessary space.

We sometimes struggle to find time to recharge ourselves fully.

I'm guilty of this, but my dog Biscuit is an expert!

Today is her 4th birthday.

Sthira sukham asanam roughly translates from Sanskrit as "steady and comfortable posture."

It means that a posture should be both stable and relaxed, allowing for a state of groundedness and comfort.

We are not individual beings that simply walk on the Earth, we are part of a vast Universe.

We are connected to each other, to nature, to the moon, the stars and the universe with a gorgeous golden thread, a web of energy.

Our bodies are naturally attuned to finding calm in green spaces or by water.

Close your eyes and imagine yourself in a gorgeous meadow.

Take a moment to explore this meadow in your minds eye.

What do you see?

What do you hear?

How does this image in your mind make you feel?

If, like me, you have tight quads (front of thighs) this pose may feel nice.

Be mindful as you get into this pose.

You might want to pop a block under your bum to raise your hips.

You can also raise the bolster with a block/blocks, to support reclining.

Or you could kneel and slowly take your hands back, using your arms for support.

Supported Supta Virasana/reclined hero pose offers a lovely stretch to the quads, hip flexors, groin and core.

It can also support in the relief of sciatica.

It opens the front of the torso and lengthens the spine, feeling into the core.

It can feel supportive of tension and stress in the pelvic area, hips, knees, thighs, and ankles.

It can also improve digestion and relieve menstrual discomfort 🌹

Some days it feels like the traffic lights are always on red!

Maybe you can use this as an opportunity for mindfulness.

Every time you have to stop at a red light today don't just zone out, take a moment to mindfully enjoy the pause.

As you sit, look around - what do you see?

Notice your surroundings.

Look at the people around you.

Perhaps notice the hustle and bustle, the business of the world around you.

Maybe think about how the red lights keep us safe.

Enjoy the pause 🫶🏼

Surya namaskar/Sun salutation is a flow we've all enjoyed in a yoga class, often used to warm up the body and to build the mind body connection.

But Surya namaskar is so much more, it's a beautiful spiritual practice.

Showing reverence and gratitude to Surya and the sun in sustaining life, illuminating the mind and soul.
