The Derby & Derbyshire Annual General Practice Conference Workshop choices are now open!

If you’re booked onto our Annual General Practice Conference, you should have received an email yesterday inviting you to select your preferred workshop choices.

With a fantastic 4 workshops available, there’s plenty to choose from, covering a range of informative topics relevant to general practice and its future.

Please take a moment to review the options and submit your preferred choices by Friday 18 September. We’ll do our best to accommodate your first choices, so we recommend booking as soon as possible.

Did you know? Here's what you can expect from your hospital care.

When you're under the care of a hospital specialist, there are certain responsibilities that sit with the hospital team.

Your specialist should:
✔️ Answer questions about your care, even after you've left the hospital.
✔️ Request any tests you need and share the results with you.
✔️ Prescribe the first supply of any new medication they recommend (and provide it immediately if it's clinically urgent).
✔️ Issue fit notes for the condition they've treated.
✔️ Help with any appointment queries through their team.

You shouldn't be told to contact your GP about these responsibilities, as they are covered by the hospital's contract.

Neighbourhood health, stronger partnerships and the future direction of primary care will be the focus of the 2026 Annual General Practice Conference next month.

Now fully booked, the event on Wednesday, 30 September will be hosted by Derby and Derbyshire Local Medical Committee (DDLMC), Derbyshire General Practice Provider Board (GPPB) and The Hub Plus.

The full agenda will be released to registered delegates soon, and attendees can expect an inspiring day filled with thought-provoking discussions, practical insights and valuable opportunities to connect with colleagues.

Colleagues from the GPPB, DDLMC and The Hub Plus will lead a series of workshops and breakout sessions focused on ‘What are neighbourhoods and why do they matter?’ and ‘Looking ahead: New relationships and future ways of working’.

There will also be a panel discussion featuring key partners who will provide greater clarity on system direction and development – with an opportunity to ask questions.

During the afternoon, attendees will have the opportunity to take part in a series of dedicated breakout workshops.

Sessions will explore a range of topics, that will deliver practical insights, encourage shared learning, and showcase innovative ways of working across the health and care system.

Speaking on behalf of the organisers, Dr Andy Mott, GPPB Medical Director, said: “As the collaborative voice for general practice in Derbyshire, we are really keen to hear from colleagues at this event about their experiences and challenges in the context of modern general practice and neighbourhood working.

“The event will feature key people and some great ideas for the future, but also, this is our chance to listen to practices and PCNs, as we understand and navigate an ever-changing landscape.”

Did you know? Let's bust some common myths about shared care.

There are many misconceptions about how shared care works between specialists and GPs. Our latest Did You Know? graphic addresses some of the most common myths.

🔍 Myth: A GP has to accept every shared care request.
Fact: Shared care is voluntary for GP practices and may be declined where it is not appropriate or safe.

🔍 Myth: If a GP declines shared care, you'll be left without your medication.
Fact: No. Your specialist remains responsible for your care and prescribing until suitable arrangements are in place.

🔍 Myth: A specialist can simply ask a GP to prescribe.
Fact: Shared care requires a formal agreement and clear clinical responsibilities between both parties.

The aim of shared care is to support safe, effective patient care by ensuring prescribing responsibilities are taken on only when it is appropriate to do so.

New Practice Resources Available

Responding to feedback from practices, DDLMC has been working with stakeholders to address feedback relating to prescribing requests associated with the Live Life Better Derbyshire smoking cessation service.

To support practices, reduce administrative burden and promote consistency, we've developed a set of practical template resources that are now available to download from the DDLMC website.
