Did you know… it is estimated that 80 per cent of infectious diseases are spread by touch.

To reduce the risk of microbial transmission in the dental practice, consistent hand hygiene and disinfecting surfaces must be essential parts of the daily workflow. This entails wiping any door handles, cleaning any bathroom facilities, and sanitising the dental chair to keep touched surfaces free from bacteria.

Dee Evans, Practice Manager at 94 Dental, Newport, has used Dentilearn twice, keeping the dental team up to date on infection control:

“Our practice had decontamination training with Anne Harris from Dentisan in February, which was her second visit to 94 Dental. Anne delivered the session in a clear and engaging way, answering all questions from the team and ensuring everyone felt confident with the correct infection control processes. The training was valuable for both new and long-standing staff, and it was great to have her support our whole dental team.”

Hand hygiene myth: Providing you use soap, it does not matter how long you wash your hands for.

The NHS recommends 20 seconds at a minimum to wash your hands effectively. Some may sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice, or the chorus to ‘Yellow Submarine’ also works.

Why 20 seconds? That is the average time it takes to eliminate any harmful bacteria and viruses on the hands, with enough time to thoroughly clean the areas between the fingers. Even when handwashing throughout the day with a reliable, moisturising hand cleanser, 20 seconds should always be the gold standard for correct hygiene outcomes.

Charity cheers for our hard-working fundraisers!

On 25th March, some of our HQ team – the Quad Squad – did a 5k inflatable run in Derby for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, with over £420 raised and counting.

Further, Jurate Platbarzdyte is our resident expert in crochet, and has been crafting some beautiful items for sale – keyrings, coasters and everything in between!

We are very proud of the fundraising efforts by the Quad Squad and look forward to seeing their next challenge – the Derby half marathon on 28th June!

International Nurses Day is celebrated globally on May 15, marking the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

This year’s event focuses on the vital role of the nursing workforce to improve health outcomes and deliver the patient-centred care that can transform our health systems.

There are over 65,000 dental nurses in the UK, and each plays an invaluable role in maintaining correct standards in infection control, from wiping down surfaces, decontaminating instruments, managing hazardous waste and so much more.

To the brilliant nurses across the UK – thank you!

Everything you need to know about Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1), a highly contagious virus that causes cold sores and fever blisters.

Most commonly transmitted through saliva or direct skin contact, HSV-1 sores can be painful around the mouth. Whilst there is no cure, the symptoms can be managed with antivirals, though the virus stays in the system. This is why 3.8 billion people under the age of 50 have a HSV-1 type infection, according to the World Health Organization.

In the dental practice, HSV-1 can spread through direct contact with active lesions, saliva, or aerosolised droplets during treatments. Members of the dental team and other patients are at risk of infection and cross-infection, respectively. It is important to wait for any lesions to heal before treating patients, as dental treatments may cause trauma or trigger a dormant HSV-1 infection. In cases of emergencies however, PPE and consistent and effective infection control protocols are required.

Stay alert and be diligent with infection control!
