Could you spare a little time to help our Marlborough charity shop? We're looking for friendly volunteers to join the team at our new Wiltshire Sight shop in Marlborough! There are lots of ways to get involved, from helping customers at the till and sorting donations to displaying stock and keeping the shop looking its best.

Whether you enjoy chatting to people, love organising things or simply want to give something back to your local community, we'd love to hear from you.

Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, learn new skills and help support blind and partially sighted people across Wiltshire.

Helping make Stourhead more accessible!

Members of our Tisbury social group recently visited Stourhead House, a National Trust property near Mere, to review the existing touch tour and share their ideas for making it more accessible to blind and partially sighted visitors.

The visit followed conversations between Wiltshire Sight and the Stourhead team about improving accessibility at the property. Our group explored parts of the house and offered practical feedback about what worked well, what was difficult and what could be improved.

And we're delighted that one change is already happening! Following recommendations from the group, Stourhead has introduced lanyards for blind and partially sighted visitors. These will help room guides recognise when someone may benefit from additional information about which objects can be touched, more detailed descriptions or extra lighting.

There's more work to be done, but it's encouraging to see the group's feedback already helping to shape the visitor experience. A big thank you to everyone from our Tisbury social group who took part and shared their thoughts, and to the team at Stourhead for listening and working with us to make the property more accessible.

Did you know clothing can be adapted to make it work better for you? Local charity Dressability will be joining two of our social groups over the next couple of months to talk about how clothing can be adapted to suit people’s individual physical needs.

From hems to haberdashery, the team will explain some of the practical changes they can make to clothing to help solve everyday problems and make clothes work better for the wearer.

We’re open in Marlborough!

Today we’ve opened the doors to our brand-new Wiltshire Sight charity shop at 133 High Street, Marlborough.

The shop is looking fantastic and is packed with quality women’s and men’s clothing, shoes and accessories, homeware, toys, games, books and puzzles, as well as a selection of new goods.

We’ve also thought carefully about accessibility when designing the shop, with bright, even lighting, clear pathways, high-contrast signage and other features to make browsing easier for blind and partially sighted customers.

We’d love you to pop in, have a browse and say hello to the team. And if you’re having a clear-out, we’re looking for donations of good-quality items to help keep our rails and shelves full.

Join us for a very special visit to the Touch exhibition in Corsham. On Wednesday 23 September at 10am, our Corsham social group will be visiting Touch at The Pound Arts Centre, and we’d love to extend the invitation to other blind and partially sighted people living locally.

Touch is a sculpture exhibition designed to be experienced through more than sight. Most of the artworks can be explored through touch, with sculptures made from materials including stone, bronze, ceramics, wool and woven waste.

Two of the exhibiting artists, Martin Elphick and Lizzie Hill, will be joining us in the morning. They’ll introduce the exhibition, talk about the importance of touch in their creative work and help guide us around the sculptures.

The exhibition has also been designed with blind and partially sighted visitors in mind. Braille information is available, high-visibility tape identifies the plinths of sculptures that can be touched, and most pieces have QR codes which allow you to hear the artists talk about their work.

Wednesday 23 September. We’ll meet at 10am for an introduction from the artists, followed by a guided tour of the exhibition.

AI, holidays, Christmas chaos... there’s plenty to talk about at our first Online Meet-ups!

Our new monthly Online Meet-ups are for working-age blind and partially sighted adults. They’re not lectures or webinars – they’re informal online get-togethers with guest contributors and plenty of time for conversation, questions and hopefully a few laughs along the way.

They’re open to people from across Wiltshire Sight, Sight Support West of England and Insight Gloucestershire, as well as anyone who is completely new to us.

19 October – The AI Frontier: Exploring Tools for Independence
From apps that read menus and describe your surroundings to smart glasses that act as a digital pair of eyes, AI is opening up some fascinating possibilities. But let’s be real – it isn’t perfect. We’ll get into the hype versus the reality, AI hallucinations, privacy concerns and tools that aren’t quite as accessible as they claim to be. Whether you’re an AI power-user or you’ve never touched a ‘smart’ app in your life, come along and join the conversation.

16 November – Pack Your Bags: Let’s Talk Travel
Whether you’re a seasoned globetrotter, prefer travelling with a specialist tour operator or are wondering how on earth other blind and partially sighted people manage it, this one’s for you. Train, plane or bus, we’ll be talking about the practicalities of travelling with sight loss, along with favourite destinations, holiday stories and, of course, the occasional travel disaster.

14 December – Festive & Fearless: Navigating Christmas with Sight Loss
Christmas can be wonderful – but it can also involve trying to cook a festive dinner without turning it to charcoal, wrestling with present wrapping and wondering how you’re going to make it through all the festive chaos with your sanity intact. Grab a mince pie and join us to talk about the practical side of Christmas with sight loss, from cooking and shopping to protecting your energy and actually enjoying yourself.

All three Meet-ups take place online via Zoom, from 7.30pm–8.30pm.

Eye Can Gloucester is now just a few weeks away!

Organised by our partner charity Insight Gloucestershire, this free exhibition is a chance for blind and partially sighted people, friends and family to explore equipment and technology, meet local services and organisations, and hear from guest speakers.

Is Eye Can Gloucester for me? If you’ve been thinking about coming along, the answer is very likely yes. Eye Can Gloucester is for blind and partially sighted people, as well as anyone supporting them, whether that’s a partner, family member, friend or professional.

You might come along if:
• you’ve recently been diagnosed and don’t know where to start
• you’ve been blind or partially sighted for some time and want to explore new options
• you’re interested in trying equipment or technology for yourself
• you’re looking for advice, local support or new opportunities
• you simply want to find out what’s out there

You’ll be able to meet a wide range of exhibitors on the day, from technology and equipment specialists including HumanWare, Optelec, Dolphin Computer Access, Synapptic and VisionAid Technologies, to organisations such as RNIB, Blind Veterans, Barnwood Trust and Gloucestershire Eye Therapy Trust.

There will also be plenty of local organisations to discover, including Gloucestershire’s talking newspapers, Everyman Theatre Cheltenham and, of course, our own Sight Loss Advice and Digital Skills teams.

There will also be a programme of talks throughout the day, which you’re welcome to drop into alongside exploring the exhibition.

You can explore as much or as little as you like, ask questions, try things for yourself and take the day at your own pace.

We’re looking for a new Community Sight Loss Adviser to join our team and support blind and partially sighted people across Mid Wiltshire.

This is a varied, people-focused role, providing one-to-one information, advice and guidance to blind and partially sighted people across Mid Wiltshire. You’ll run our Community Hubs in Devizes, Calne, Marlborough and Pewsey, where you’ll meet with people locally, help them find practical ways forward and support the social groups that meet alongside the hubs.

You don’t need previous experience of working with sight loss – comprehensive training will be provided. We’re looking for someone with strong people skills who is proactive, organised and wants to make a difference locally.

Community Sight Loss Adviser – Mid Wiltshire
• 3 days per week
• £26,000 pro rata
• Covering Devizes, Calne, Marlborough & Pewsey
• Closing date: 5pm, Thursday 17 September
