Wiltshire Sight is an independent charity supporting people living with sight loss in Wiltshire and Swindon. We assist more than 1,100 people of all ages, as well as their families and carers. We offer information, advice and guidance, as well as giving people practical and emotional support to help them in their daily lives. We have a fully equipped resource centre at St Lucy’s in Devizes, offering state-of-the-art assistive technology products and low vision aids.

We’re looking for a new Community Sight Loss Adviser to join our team and support blind and partially sighted people across Mid Wiltshire.

This is a varied, people-focused role, providing one-to-one information, advice and guidance to blind and partially sighted people across Mid Wiltshire. You’ll run our Community Hubs in Devizes, Calne, Marlborough and Pewsey, where you’ll meet with people locally, help them find practical ways forward and support the social groups that meet alongside the hubs.

You don’t need previous experience of working with sight loss – comprehensive training will be provided. We’re looking for someone with strong people skills who is proactive, organised and wants to make a difference locally.

Community Sight Loss Adviser – Mid Wiltshire
• 3 days per week
• £26,000 pro rata
• Covering Devizes, Calne, Marlborough & Pewsey
• Closing date: 5pm, Thursday 17 September

A really useful reminder from Claire of Can See Can’t See about why power cuts can have an extra impact when you’re blind or partially sighted.

The Priority Services Register is free to join and can provide extra support during a power cut. If you haven’t registered yet, it’s well worth checking whether you’re eligible.

We’re recruiting in Marlborough! We’re looking for a dynamic and dedicated Charity Shop Supervisor to join our amazing charity retail team and help make a success of our new Marlborough shop.

If you’re a charity shop enthusiast with retail experience, love creating a brilliant shopping environment and providing excellent customer service, this could be the role for you.

You’ll support the Shop Manager with the day-to-day running of the shop, from processing donations and creating attractive displays to engaging with the local community and supporting our incredible team of volunteers.

This is a permanent, part-time role for 15–22.5 hours per week, including weekends, paying £12.71 per hour.

What do you wish people knew about being blind or partially sighted?

In the latest issue of Visible, we asked people at our social groups and members of our team what they wish others understood about sight loss. Their answers covered everything from common misconceptions and unwanted help to navigating shops, changes in lighting and the things sighted people say and do.

A few of the things people told us:
• “Don’t shout, I can hear perfectly well.”
• “I prefer if people ask if I need help rather than assuming that I do.”
• “It’s ok to use words like ‘see’ or ‘watch’. I still watch a film or TV show, just in a different way.”

Our first Online Meet-ups are here! This autumn we're launching a new series of relaxed online get-togethers for working age blind and partially sighted adults, with a different topic to get us talking each month.

• Monday 19 October, 7.30pm – The AI Frontier: Exploring Tools for Independence
From apps that can read menus and describe your surroundings to smart glasses that act as a digital pair of eyes, AI is opening up some fascinating possibilities. But what actually works and what doesn't?
We'll explore the hype versus reality, share favourite tools and technology mishaps, and talk about what we really need from AI to make it useful and accessible.

• Monday 16 November, 7.30pm – Pack Your Bags: Let's Talk Travel
Whether you're a seasoned globetrotter or wondering how other blind and partially sighted people approach travel, come and swap experiences, practical tips and inspiration. We'll talk about different ways to travel, favourite destinations, memorable moments – and perhaps a holiday disaster or two!

Both Meet-ups take place on Zoom. You don't need to know anything about the topic beforehand, come along to share your experiences, ask questions or simply listen to the conversation.

Could your wardrobe help support local blind and partially sighted people?

Our Trowbridge charity shop is currently looking for donations of good quality clothing and accessories.

If you have clothes, shoes, handbags or accessories that are in great condition but no longer needed, we'd love to give them a new home. Every sale helps raise vital funds to support people across Wiltshire.

Donations can be dropped off during opening hours at 27 Fore Street, Trowbridge BA14 8EW.

If you're closer to Salisbury or Devizes, we're always happy to receive good quality donations at those shops too.
