If you’ve ever gone to bed feeling bloated or uncomfortable, you’ll know how hard it is to sleep.

The gut and brain are deeply connected, so digestive issues can easily spill over into poor sleep.
Sometimes improving sleep isn’t about doing more at bedtime — it’s about supporting your gut!

The gut-sleep link...

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that acts a bit like a hormone and 90-95% of it is produced in your intestinal gut lining.

It has a direct impact on your sleep ability as it is a precursor to melatonin - a hormone that regulates our sleep/wake cycle.

Serotonin also cross-talks with your nervous system so if you are anxious or stressed, this can affect your gut.

If your gut is all over the place, this could be affecting your sleep - struggles like painful bloating, indigestion, food sensitivities, changes to your stool and all of those typical IBS symptoms could need addressing for a healthy night sleep.

Common signs and culprits:

🍽 heavy late dinners
☹️ reflux
⚖ blood sugar dips overnight
😱 gut inflammation
🦠 poor microbiome balance (dysbiosis)

Try this:

🥗 Eat dinner earlier - Try to finish eating 2–3 hours before bed
🦠 Support your gut microbiome - healthy gut bacteria help regulate serotonin and circadian rhythms
🍨 Avoid heavy or sugary late-night snacks - can cause blood sugar fluctuations and digestive discomfort
🥰 Manage stress during the day. Stress affects digestion through the gut–brain axis. Wind down before bed

Have you ever gone through a week where your body just feels… off?
Not necessarily “unwell,” but not quite you, either.

Sometimes your body doesn’t shout… it just gives you little nudges.

Here are a few of the really common, really gentle signs that your system might be asking for a bit of extra support:

1. You’re tired… even when you shouldn’t be
You’ve slept, you haven’t done anything intense, but you still feel flat.
That kind of tiredness usually has nothing to do with motivation and everything to do with your body working overtime in the background.

2. Your skin is more reactive than usual
A bit of redness here, irritation there, or products suddenly not agreeing with you.
Your skin often tells you something’s up long before you notice it elsewhere.

3. Bloating that doesn’t seem to make sense
You eat something you’ve always eaten… and suddenly your stomach’s like “Nope.”
It’s not always about food — sometimes it’s about how supported (or unsupported) your whole system feels.

4. That foggy, ‘can’t quite focus’ feeling
You know when your head just feels heavy or cloudy?
It’s such a common sign that your body’s running low on reserves.

5. Feeling puffy or inflamed
Hands, face, tummy — that subtle puffiness that’s hard to explain but easy to feel.
Often it’s just your body holding onto a bit more than it needs.

💛 If you read this and thought “yes… that’s me,” please know you’re not alone.

These signs aren’t dramatic or scary — they’re just your body’s way of whispering for gentler choices and a bit more support.

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to be sharing some really simple things that can make a difference: little nourishment tweaks, lifestyle shifts, and even the products we use every day.

If any of this resonates, pop me a 💚 and I’ll send you a couple of easy, personalised tips you can try straight away.

The beauty industry has exploded in recent years — with products for everything from eye care to foot care.

But with that rise in variety comes increased exposure to harsh chemicals and synthetic ingredients that our skin (and bodies) have to process.

Many of these products are cleverly marketed, especially to young people, through bright packaging, influencer testimonials, and dramatic before-and-after photos. It’s easy to get drawn in — but not always easy to see what’s really in the bottle.

We all know that what we eat affects our health — but did you know that what you put on your skin can also impact your body?

Your skin is your largest organ and absorbs some of the ingredients applied to it. Over time, certain synthetic chemicals found in everyday products can build up and interfere with your body’s natural balance — from your hormones to your immune system.

Here are a few common culprits to look out for 👇

🌸 Parabens – Used as preservatives, parabens can mimic oestrogen in the body. Research has linked long-term exposure to hormonal disruption and reproductive changes.

🌸 Phthalates – Often hidden under the word “fragrance.” These chemicals help scents last longer but can also disrupt hormone function and affect fertility.

🌸 Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – A foaming agent in cleansers and shampoos that can strip the skin’s natural oils and damage the skin barrier, leading to irritation and dryness.

🌸 Triclosan – An antibacterial agent that can alter your gut and skin microbiome and contribute to antibiotic resistance.

🌸 Synthetic Fragrance – A single “fragrance” listing can contain dozens of chemicals, many of which are allergens or hormone disruptors.

Your skin and gut are closely connected. The same toxins that irritate your skin can influence inflammation, immunity, and even digestion. When the liver and gut are overwhelmed, your skin often shows it — through breakouts, rashes, or dullness.

Just like we focus on eating clean, it’s worth thinking about “clean skincare.”

Choose products with:

✅ Plant-based ingredients
✅ Natural preservatives
✅ Transparent, chemical-free formulations
✅ Antioxidant-rich oils and botanicals that feed the skin

If you remember anything from this post - remember this 👇

If you wouldn’t eat it, think twice before putting it on your skin.

Your skin is part of your body’s detox system — not just a surface. Support it with clean products and good nutrition from within.

🌿 Why Reducing Your Toxic Load Matters

As a nutritional therapist, I often see how modern life quietly overloads our bodies — from pesticides and plastics to synthetic skincare and cleaning products.

Your body can detoxify beautifully, but when it’s constantly bombarded, you might notice fatigue, skin flare-ups, brain fog, or sluggish digestion.

The good news? You can make a big difference with a few small, realistic changes 👇

🥦 Food:
Choose real, unprocessed foods.
Go organic for high-pesticide produce (check the Dirty Dozen).
Support your liver with leafy greens, garlic, lemon, and beetroot.
And don’t forget water — your simplest detox tool!

🧴 Skin & Bodycare:
Your skin is your largest organ and absorbs much of what you put on it.
Choose simple, natural formulations without parabens, SLS, or artificial fragrance.
Read the labels — if you wouldn’t eat it, think twice about applying it daily
A few mindful swaps can significantly reduce your exposure over time.

🏡 Home:
Ditch chemical cleaners for simple ones like vinegar or baking soda.
Open windows daily and bring in a few houseplants to freshen your air.

Reducing your toxic load isn’t about being perfect — it’s about progress.
Every swap helps your body do what it’s designed to do: thrive 🌱
