Lordington Park Agronomy

Lordington Park Agronomy Independent agronomist & agroecologist Jonathan Holmes, Healthy Soil, Healthy Crops, Healthy Profits.

Agronomy is defined by the Oxford English dictionary as The science of soil management and crop production, and that is exactly what I practice. Essentially I take the historic Organic principles from the late 1800s of sustainability and environmental harmony and then compliment that philosophy with modern soil science, appropriate fertiliser, and crucially the ideal grass species that will promot

e health and well-being. Once that concept has been implemented this ideal is then enhanced further with Companion Plants that provide extra nutrition that is readily available for the animals to utilise, as it is plant derived, rather than man made. This whole process is dependant on carrying out a comprehensive analytical survey of the prevailing soils ability to sustain the sward (Upper layers of soil covered in grass) This analysis would normally encompass assessing the Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) of the soil as this is the determinant of the soils ability to supply nutrition to the grass. From this analysis a cost-effective fertiliser regimen can be generated.

Both rugby pitches in Wortley are looking great, despite the mixed weather and elevation!

Chuffed with the results, and bodes well for summer durability and the start of the new season.

These renovated rugby pitches are already looking so lush that the grass aftermath will need macerating to keep the surface playable. A nice problem to have!

“Someone mention ploughing?”

Jonathan Holmes discussing all things soil... and looking exactly how he feels when someone suggests disturbing healthy, established soil.

Soil sampling up at Edinglassie in Aberdeenshire last week. It was only 3C above ground, but a glorious Scottish day.

Soil 5C so no microbial activity taking place, but huge worm numbers (all three species) in most samples testament to a viable healthy soil functioning despite the cold.

Only intervention has been knife-aeration and harrowing at the right time earlier in the year.

Sheep all thriving on the native grasses in the dry summer as the OM is 6% and above in most fields. 1% OM holds 85,000L of water a hectare, so the native grasses were able to keep supplying forage for the sheep without burning off.

Fantastic example of what happens to soil over millennia when the topography varies so much.

Pale sample, little silt or clay, at the top of hill, and darker sample at bottom as silt and clay so tiny they are washed through the soil profile, downhill.

Grand day out with the gang. Birds flew well in the wind.
The ‘gormless one’ aka Django put in a stunning performance. Saw a bird shot 4 guns away, marked it, so I sent him and back in a flash! Certainly runs like he is on wheels, so sent him for another one with the same result 😊
Ritza had some outstanding finds in thick cover, but started to spit her birds at me as impatient to get on. Hence making her concentrate on her skills with the duck.
Sovka on it as always, and impatient to get on!! Can’t think who she takes after 🤔
Bodes well for a fun filled Season.

Grass for horse hay drilled in early October... later than planned, but into an ideal seedbed with soil at 10.2 °C.

Now emerged, conditions should encourage more growth. Bespoke mixture to match our soil and the horses’ digestion: meadow fescue, sheep’s fescue, timothy, creeping bent and creeping red fescue (to stabilise the sward with stolons and rhizomes), plus cocksfoot for protein and strong copper & zinc uptake.

No artificial Nitrogen, just seaweed extract and zinc to support plant and soil resilience.
