Sometimes girls learn to mask so well that their struggles are missed completely.
Masking can absolutely be seen in autistic girls (and boys) but it is also important to remember that masking alone does not automatically mean autism. Anxiety, sensory, overwhelm, trauma, social pressures, low self esteem and burnout can sometimes look similar too.
Every child’s experience is unique, which is why understanding the ‘why’ behind the behaviour is so important.

Behaviour is communication. 💛

What we see on the surface…meltdowns, shutdowns, frustration, withdrawal, aggression, tears, or distressed behaviour is often just the visible eruption of something much deeper.

Underneath may be sensory overwhelm, unmet needs, communication struggles, anxiety, exhaustion, or a nervous system that simply feels unsafe or overloaded.

When we respond with curiosity instead of judgement, and compassion instead of anger, we create space for children to feel understood, supported, and regulated.

Every child deserves adults who wonder why and look deep to understand 💙

An autism report provides valuable insight but knowing how to use it makes all the difference.
Receiving your child’s autism report can bring a mix of emotions: relief, questions and sometimes uncertainty💙❤️ The report is there to support you to better understand your child. It’s ok to take it one step at a time. Revisit recommendations, use it in school meetings, share it with professionals and help others understand your child’s needs. This will help you advocate for your child and ensure their needs are understood and met 🫶❣️
