Dunfermline Advocacy

Dunfermline Advocacy Dunfermline Advocacy is a SCIO (Scottish Incorporated Charitable Organisation) which provides Citizen Advocacy to vulnerable adults in West Fife.

Dunfermline Advocacy offers Long Term and Short Term Citizen Advocacy to vulnerable adults in West Fife. In Short Term Citizen Advocacy partnerships the trusting relationship, or friendship, is just as important as it is for the long-term partnerships, but there is a more immediate issue to address and the partnership will usually end when this is resolved. Short-term advocates work with their par

tners to ensure that their needs and views are represented, whether by attending meetings, helping complete paperwork or talking to members of a social care team. Becoming a short-term advocate is a great way for those who are unable to make a long-term, stable commitment to help those people in need of their support. Long-term Citizen Advocacy is based on a long-lasting friendship of respect and equality between two individuals. Advocates will spend time getting to know their partner and understanding what issues are important to them. They will provide support to help make decisions and allow their partner to put forward their own views and most importantly will be a friendly face and companion for their partner. Like all relationships, every Citizen Advocacy Partnership is unique, but in general a Citizen Advocate:

- Gets to know their Partner, spending time together and building up a picture of the Partner’s life.

- Helps the Partner to examine their situation and decide what issues are important to them
spends time discussing different options so that the Partner has unbiased support to help them to make vital decisions.

- Focuses on what the Partner wants and helps them to put their own views forward
treats the Partner as an equal and encourages others to do the same.

- Is prepared to make a long-term commitment once the Partnership is established.

"I don't have time."
"I wouldn't know what to say."
"I'm not a professional."

These are some of the statements that stop most people getting in touch about becoming a Volunteer Citizen Advocate. Here's the truth:

"I don't have time." - Most partnerships need a few hours a month, some need an hour a week or fortnight. You tell us what you can offer.

"I wouldn't know what to say." - You don't need the right words. You need to listen. That's the whole skill.

"I'm not a professional." - Good. We're not looking for professionals. We're looking for ordinary people who care.

If one of these has been holding you back, we'd genuinely love to hear from you: https://www.dunfermlineadvocacy.org/volunteer-with-us/

Ever wondered what a Citizen Advocate actually does? Here's what a typical short-term partnership can look like, start to finish (details changed to protect privacy):

We are contacted about someone who needs advocacy support with an urgent concern such as housing, health or social care appointments.

🟡We match them with a Volunteer Advocate based on availability and personality.
🔵The advocate meets their partner, listens and helps them to work out what they actually want to happen.
🟠The advocate might attend a meeting, make a call or help write a letter - always representing what their partner wants, not what's "easiest".
🟡Once the issue is resolved, the partnership usually comes to a natural close - though some may go on to be referred over to our long-term community service.

No two partnerships look the same That's kind of the point.

>>>> Impact Story:

For many of our Citizen Advocacy Partners, their Citizen Advocate is the only person in their life who isn't paid to be there.

Think about that for a moment. Carers, Social Workers, Support Staff - all vital, all wonderful, and all there because of their job. A Citizen Advocate is difference. They show up because they want to.

That difference matters more than you might think. It's the difference between being looked after and being someone's genuine support.

Could you be that person for someone in West Fife?

Meet Hayley*, one of our Citizen Advocates.

Why did you start?
"I had a friend who was Citizen Advocate and I thought it sounded like a good thing to do."

What surprised you?
“Getting to a point where I know my partner better than most other people in her life. I really like that feeling and think it’s a real privilege.”

What would you tell someone thinking about it?
“It’s a completely different volunteering experience from other things available and is extremely rewarding because of that”

If Hayley’s story resonates, we'd love to hear from you too: https://www.dunfermlineadvocacy.org/volunteer-with-us/

A few months ago, one of our advocacy partners was struggling with some issues. Their Citizen Advocate didn't have any special benefits training but knew that CARF was the place to go, so supported their partner to get in touch. Once that first call was made, the Advocate stayed alongside them — working through each task CARF asked them to complete, one step at a time, making sure nothing felt too overwhelming to tackle.

That's not a dramatic story. It's just someone having the right person beside them at the right time. That's what Citizen Advocacy is.

We're always looking for people willing to be that person.

You don't need a qualification to change someone's life. You need time, patience, and a willingness to listen. That's a Citizen Advocate.
Our advocates come from all walks of life — teachers, tradespeople, retirees, parents, students. What they have in common isn't a background in social care. It's a bit of spare time and a genuine interest in someone else's wellbeing.

If that sounds like you, we'd love to talk. Get in touch for an informal, no-pressure chat: https://www.dunfermlineadvocacy.org/volunteer-with-us/
