Volunteers are dedicated, passionate, and inspiring members of our teams and local communities.

Between 1 April 2025 and 30 March 2026, volunteers contributed 1,236 hours of their time, representing an estimated Β£14,832 of social value based on the UK Real Living Wage.

This contribution reflects the significant role volunteers play in strengthening our communities, supporting services, and improving outcomes for local people.

Thank you, everyone, for such a valuable contribution.

A final volunteer from our team we’d love to celebrate this Volunteers' Week is Pauline.

Pauline joined us lacking confidence and unsure about her future after experiencing a stroke, which affected both her physical and mental health. She felt she may never be able to work again.

With support, Pauline began rebuilding her skills, gaining experience in processing referrals and using a computer. Over time, she discovered a passion for being out in the community rather than in an office setting.

Now, Pauline is a valued part of our team in East Durham, helping to prepare and support our Eatwise group sessions.

It’s been a privilege to see Pauline grow in confidence. She is proud as punch to wear her volunteer t-shirt, and we are so proud to have her as part of our team.

Introducing Gayle, another dedicated volunteer in the community.

Gayle arrived in Murton during one of the hardest periods of her life, recovering from a mental health crisis and feeling alone. The volunteers at Heart on the Terrace welcomed her in, offering the connection she needed, and she’s never looked back.

Now Gayle is there most days, offering others the same kindness she once relied on: a smile, a cuppa, and a listening ear. When she was put forward to volunteer with π—ͺ𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗢𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 π—Ÿπ—Άπ—³π—², it was instantly clear she belonged. Her natural ability to connect, her eagerness to learn, and her genuinely caring nature make her an invaluable part of the community.

Here’s a comment from Gayle about her journey: "It's been good for me to have the support I've had from Heart on the Terrace. To know I wasn't alone in my mental health recovery. I wanted to volunteer with Wellbeing for Life to give someone else the support I've had. The training is superb; I've had great support when I need it and I've really enjoyed."

A second volunteer we'd like to shine a spotlight on, here's Kara.

Kara has been a brilliant volunteer with π—ͺ𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗢𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 π—Ÿπ—Άπ—³π—² (WBFL). She first got involved by supporting one‑to‑one Eatwise sessions out in the community, where her friendly nature helped people feel at ease straight away. She later stepped into admin support, taking on any training she needed and adapting quickly.

What really makes Kara stand out is her attitude. She’s always cheerful, always willing to get stuck in, and always ready to lend a hand with whatever’s going on. On top of everything she does for WBFL, she is also a carer for her mother – yet she still shows up with energy, kindness, and commitment.

Recently, Kara secured a new job, but she’s still keen to volunteer whenever she can, which really shows how much she values being part of WBFL.

Kara has made a real difference to the team and the people we support, and she continues to be a valued part of the service.

Here’s a quote from Kara herself: β€œThe training and the support the staff have given me has been brilliant. I've enjoyed working in different parts of the service and gaining experience whilst giving back to the community.”

It’s Volunteers' Week, and we’d love to take the chance to celebrate some of the special people who dedicate their time to making a difference to the lives of others and who help their communities to thrive.

We will be sharing stories from some inspiring people who have supported across our services throughout the week. Keep an eye out – you may spot someone you know.

First, here’s Steven.

Steven first met us at a Bishop Auckland Job Centre event and signed up for one-to-one support around healthy weight management. During that period of support, he’s achieved incredible success: reducing both his body weight and BMI and building his confidence and self-belief.

Feeling the benefits of the programme, Steven was keen to give something back, so he decided to join π—ͺ𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗢𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 π—Ÿπ—Άπ—³π—² as a volunteer. Steven brings lived experience to our delivery; something that is incredibly powerful and simply cannot be taught. Our clients within the groups he supports are now able to benefit from things he learned during his own behaviour change journey, making them feel more optimistic about their own.

Steven’s progress has been amazing to watch, and he’s already looking ahead. This year, he’ll be supporting our upcoming men’s group alongside staff. We’re so proud of how far he’s come β€” and excited for what’s next for him.

Steven said of his experience volunteering: β€œCat created a welcoming environment, and I lost a lot of weight. I wanted to give back and help others do the same. Now I volunteer supporting the group Eatwise sessions and tell people my take on things.”

πŸ’š Are you living with cancer and concerned with transport to your appointments?

Our 𝗝𝗼𝗢𝗻𝗢𝗻𝗴 π˜π—΅π—² π——π—Όπ˜π˜€ has been supporting a 70 year old man with head and neck cancer who was due to start radiotherapy. As his treatment was going to be daily for four weeks, he was worried about being able to get to the appointments. We informed him of the patient transport service, and liaised with the radiotherapy booking team to arrange his transport for him.

This was a great relief for him during a stressful time, and a weight taken off his shoulders.

πŸ’™ We recently had a wonderful update from Bev, a client who completed the π—ͺ𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗢𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 π—Ÿπ—Άπ—³π—² (WBFL) Eatwise programme some months ago.

Jules, WBFL Community Connector, and Bev met again for Bev's six-month follow up after completing the Eatwise programme. Her overall weight loss is nearly three and a half stone which has caused her BMI to fall from 34 to 26.1.

Now, Bev is also going to be running the Great North Run for the cancer support charity The Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust at the age of 60. She has already made many fantastic achievements over the course of her weight loss journey, and this is another incredible step.

We're so pleased for Bev and what she is doing is amazing. You can read the full story of Bev's weight loss journey here: www.yourwellbeingservices.uk/how-weve-helped/bev-was-empowered-through-the-eatwise-programme
