💬 Massage after breast cancer surgery, what does the research say?
Research title: The Effects of Massage Therapy in Decreasing Pain and Anxiety in Post Surgical Patients With Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta Analysis, Cole et al., 2024

This review found that massage therapy was associated with reduced pain and anxiety in women after breast cancer surgery. The studies included several hands on approaches, including classic massage, reflexology, myofascial release and myofascial therapy.

The limitations are important. Only seven studies were included, the interventions varied, and treatment timing ranged from immediately after surgery to 16 weeks post surgery. That makes it difficult to say which specific technique, dose or timing mattered most.

The practical message is that massage may support comfort and anxiety reduction after breast cancer surgery, but only with appropriate oncology aware training, consent, pressure adaptation and respect for surgical recovery.
