We're heading towards the summer solstice at the weekend, the longest day. I love this time of year, though the light hasn't been quite as bright this year with all the rain.

This is one of the few times in the year I like to be up early, to feel the stillness of the earth as the sun picks up (I'm not up that early that I see the sun rise - unless I need a wee!). But here's a photo of the nearly sunrise at Morar in the Highlands :)

It's also one of the few times in summer that I practice sun sequence (surya namaskar). Generally I find it a bit too heating and pitta aggravating for me even when it's not so hot and sunny, but it always feels right to do it this week.

Here are a few pointers for a summer sun sequence that I hope keep the energy vibrant and not too hot and bothering!

* Keep the pace steady and moderate throughout. Avoid the temptation to speed up.
* Really focus on the abdominal stretch the sequence provides to help the movement of heat from the small intestines and liver.
* 9 rounds is plenty for summer.
* Make sure you do a relaxation after the sequences, breathe in coolness from the atmosphere and earth, breathe out the heat.

Let me know if you are up in time to see the sun rise 🙂

If you've been to my classes for any length of time, you'll know that one of my favourite moves to improve balance is the drunken line test.

What have I just read in June's 'Good Housekeeping' in an article titled 'How old are you really?', which includes advice on how important the function of balance is...

"...balance is vital for moving confidently as we age and for avoiding falls, one of the major causes of serious injury in later life."

And along with recommending daily practice of squats, hops and lunges "...walk heel to toe in a straight line every morning when you get out of bed. This challenges balance and coordination."

Yes!!

TUESDAY TRIVIA
Last week we started looking at Janu Sirsasana, head to knee pose. This is one of those postures where the name comes from the position you are aiming for...Janu means knee, Sirsa is head, and we asana is posture or seat.

Now this is all well and good if you are super flexible! But for those of us not so bendy, far better to aim for tummy to thighs, rather than head to knee, this will stop you rounding and potentially straining your back :)

Well, I'm a little over the half way point of my 40 day Tiger challenge, so thought I'd share a few of my musings so far :)

At first all I could think about was what I didn't like about this asana, namely that it made me hot and irritable. I dug a bit deeper, yes, it was raising my pitta and I had to knock it off during the really hot weather, but it was making me hot and irritable because it frustrated me. I was frustrated because I couldn't find my balance point, I didn't feel stable, which made me feel vulnerable. This was an interesting observation that I could work with.

I kept going, focussing on softening the experience, dialling down the effort and expectation to get it right. When I asked what you loved about it Tiger, Carole commented:

"I just love the flow of feeling really long/ extended at one end of the flowing movement and deliciously curled up as my knee comes towards my head. I think it helped from the get go on the DYTT whoever was teaching said ‘feel like a panther running across the savanna!"

This feels like something I can work with, so that has been my focus - I've even been watching videos of big cats walk and prowling for inspiration ha ha.

I've also added in more mooladhara focused yoga to my daily practice, along with some more targetted strength work for my glutes to support my pelvis.

I'll let you know my final thoughts after the 40 days, but I'm quite pleased with my progress so far :)

FABULOUS FRIDAY'S TIP OF THE DAY: How to get the most from your asana practice. BOAT POSE

You might now be feeling strong enough to lift a bit higher, and feel able to focus on what your upper body is doing.

Think about keeping your spine long, and your heart / chest area open (sternum lifted).

If you are able to lift the arms from the floor, relax your shoulders, extending your elbows. I like to imagine that I am lifting from the wrists, with my hands rising as if on giant balloons, as a visual person this helps me to lift the arms without involving my shoulders in the stabilisation work.

We were all feeling a bit creaky this morning at yoga, I think it's all the rain - we are all rusting like the tin man! Lucky we have our trusty yoga :)

Channelling Dorothy, I guided us through the Anti Arthritic sequence, encouraging movement in the joints and fascia with our asana and flows until we were feeling human again! Love this message from one student...

"Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your class was WD40 this morning."

The moral of this story - It doesn't matter how much you creak, nobody can hear you on Zoom, just move!

Our next early morning, Rise and Shine session is coming up, Saturday June 20th, 7 - 8am, online for just £5.50 when we'll be honouring the sun on the beautiful Summer Solstice.

Rise and Shine sessions are a bit different to a normal class, here's a little more info...

* I talk a lot less! I want you to really get into your own yoga practice and how your mind and body experiences the yoga.
* I generally share some of my current daily yoga practice, so there's always a something new 🙂
* They don't always follow the regular class format. I'm aiming for a slow and gentle awakening.
* The yoga is all about connecting with the energy of the season. This session is particularly uplifting, bringing calm vitality.

* Oh and according to one attendee "the Rise and Shine sessions come with a bonus package of 'smug' for those of us who are not usually up and active at that time on a Saturday. My 'smug' lasted most of the weekend." 🤣

Come and join me for a nurturing awakening to the day, Saturday June 20th 7 - 8am. The link will be in the VIP group on Friday 19th, or ask me for the link if you are not a member.

Calling my VIP group, Join me live in our Facebook group, Friday June 12th at 6pm, or catch up during the next 30 days, for our next FREE 15 minute session.

Someone has asked me to look at Rotated Triangle - good choice! This week it's the turn of our yoga flow session, so I've put a little session together with Rotated Triangle as the star of the show.

We'll look at this posture in more detail in the next session which will be our "technical" session :) so if you have any questions about this posture let me know :)
