Have you thought about trying open water swimming as a way to help manage your menopausal transition naturally?

Research has shown that regular cold water immersion improves sleep, mood, reduces stress, reduces inflammation and musculoskeletal pain, can help with hot flushes, contributes to weight loss by boosting metabolism, strengthens the immune system to fight off infections, promotes lymphatic drainage, improves insulin resistance and mental and physical resilience…and more…and you feel amazing afterwards due to the release of hormones.

I know many of you will look at this and your brains will be saying “NO WAY!”, “I hate the cold”, “I’m scared about what creatures may be lurking under the water” - all normal fears, but most people feel that way about swimming outdoors until they try it with guidance…and then they get hooked!

Trying this in a group as a shared experience boosts your confidence and makes it more fun and you make friends with other women going through this midlife transition.

I’m an experienced open water swim coach, cold water therapy practitioner, menopause wellbeing practitioner and functional breathing coach - so can combine all of these skills to offer these cold water dipping/swimming sessions for menopausal women (no upper age limit) at WeirWood Reservoir in Forest Row, East Sussex, RH18 5HT.

The sessions run during the open water swimming sessions run by www.WeirWood.co.uk, so there are lifeguards there and to run an open water swimming venue, the water quality is regularly tested.

You don’t have to be a “swimmer” to come to the “Flushed Dipper” sessions as there is an area where the water is waste deep, so you do not have to go out of your depth and can just “dip”. Anything goes - from heads up breaststroke chatting as you swim and enjoying the views and wildlife, to front crawl.

There will only be the swim entry fee to pay to WeirWood Sport & Leisure (£6) who provide the lifeguards. I will not charge for my time as a coach as I’m keen to make this accessible to everyone and really want you to experience the benefits of open water swimming and hopefully for some of you, overcome your anxieties about it.

For more information, see my website:

If you want to improve your endurance or the ease of your breathing during swimming, use less energy to breathe, make sure your gas exchange in the lungs is efficient….start with looking at your land-based breathing.

Take my Free Breathing Assessment, which looks at your daily breathing patterns on land, as the first step to easier or more efficient breathing when swimming.

Awareness of how you breathe on land will give you a clue about how efficient your breathing is when swimming.

Feel very lucky to have Ashdown Forest on the doorstep. Had a great time with Jack up and down Feel very lucky to have Ashdown Forest on the doorstep. Had a great time with Jack up and down hills, paddling in streams and tackling some steep hills and maintaining nose breathing.

Walking up steep hills and maintaining nose breathing is a great respiratory muscle workout! I could really feel my lower ribs expanding and contracting with every breath.

The challenge is to keep your 👃breathing as slow as possible as CO2 rises with the exercise. This is good CO2 tolerance training👃🫁💪😎 hills, paddling in streams and tackling some steep hills and maintaining nose breathing.

As a swimmer or triathlete, how do you train your breath and your endurance? Have you ever done any land-based breath training to improve your health and performance in the water?

Have you ever considered how you breathe on land on a daily basis? This will directly impact how you breathe during swimming or any other sport. It will also impact how fast you recover and even the quality of your sleep.

The first step is to start becoming aware of your daily breathing patterns on land.
* Do you breathe through your nose or mouth?
* Are you a shallow breather?
* What bout the speed of your breath, are there any pauses?
* Can you hear yourself breathe?
* Where does your tongue sit in your mouth when at rest?

A recent study of nearly 2000 athletes across sports and age groups found that over 90% exhibited dysfunctional breathing mechanics (not using correct breathing muscles).

Most people have some element of dysfunctional breathing and as an athlete, this can be affecting your performance, recovery and health, so if you haven’t considered this before, start becoming aware of how you breathe on a daily basis.

Introduced the Swimfinity Swim camp swimmers in Lanzarote to functional breathing training this morning. We worked on diaphragmatic breathing and carbon dioxide tolerance training, both of which will reduce breathlessness and improve endurance in swimming and life.

I’m in Lanzarote this week on a swim camp run by and introducing the swimmers to the importance of functional breathing and land-based breath trading protocols.

Did you know that many swimmers and athletes unknowingly have irregular or dysfunctional breathing patterns that can limit endurance, slow recovery and increase fatigue, both in the pool and on land?

Our breathwork for swimmers workshop explores how you breathe every day and how that affects your performance. If you want to improve your swimming speed or endurance, you have to work on your functional breathing.

Come and learn practical breathing techniques to improve your swimming and overall health.

Jenny attended our last breathing workshop for swimmers and was amazed how helpful it was, not only to improve her breathing during swimming, but to make her aware of how she was breathing on a daily basis and how it helped her. She kindly agreed to talk about some of these benefits.

Breath training is not new, but it is not yet integrated into sports training or people’s health routines. As a functional breathing coach I know that how we breathe on a daily basis impacts our mental and physical health and definitely our sports performance.

Most people do not fully use their diaphragm, have never trained it to strengthen it, mouth breathe during physical exercise, at rest or during sleep, to name just a few things that will affect their health and performance.

I run workshops with Kath Lambert from to help swimmers of any level become aware of their breathing in and out of the pool, and how to improve it for better health and performance. We should all know this stuff and it is our mission to spread this information.

Come and join us at the next workshop:

I’m a Thermalist Instructor, trained by Dr Susanna Soeberg, a world leading scientist in contrast therapy and metabolism.

If you’ve heard a lot about the benefits of sauna and cold water immersion but haven’t tried it yet, or want to know more about the science behind these practices, this workshop is a perfect introduction.

If you are like many people and instinctively do not like the idea of cold plunging, or sweating it out in a sauna, you can come and try a very gentle introduction.

More and more people are dealing with chronic stress in their lives, and if this is not addressed, research is indicating that this is the root cause of avoidable lifestyle diseases.

This workshop is not at all about challenging yourself and seeing how far you can push it. The Thermalist Method Workshop offers a transformative journey in nervous system regulation. Designed to help you stress down and teach your body and mind how to regulate stress effectively, this experience leaves you feeling rejuvenated, centred, and empowered.

Come and experience the transformation!

To live and function optimally, we have to ensure our daily breathing patterns are optimal. The state of our breathing impacts our mental and physical health and our sports performance.

Most people are unaware of how they breathe as it is one of the body’s automatic functions. However, it is estimated that about 90% of the population have developed some elements of dysfunctional breathing, do a whole variety of reasons.

For athletes, or anyone who does sport at any level, you want efficient breathing to minimise effort during your sport. I work a lot with swimmers and triathletes, and this is even more important but also more challenging in the water.

The good news is that we can consciously train more efficient breathing habits to optimise our performance, whether you are a competitive athlete or a fitness/recreational athlete.

The bonus is that you are also working on your physical and mental health when consciously working on your breathing.

It all starts with breath awareness and tuning into your current breathing patterns.

So stop now, close your eyes if possible, and just notice how you are breathing:

➡️ where do you feel the air entering your body?
➡️ Can you hear your breathing?
➡️ can you feel your chest rising and falling?
➡️ how fast is your breathing? Can you slow it down?

If you want to know how to improve your breathing with some simple breath training techniques, you can find out more on my website.
