Squeaky clean? 🚩 That’s actually a major red flag for your skin.
Let's talk about over-cleansing. We’ve all been conditioned to think that washing our face multiple times a day keeps breakouts at bay.
But doing it too often—or with harsh, stripping products—is actually destroying your skin barrier.
Think of your skin barrier as a brick wall: it keeps the good stuff (hydration) IN and the bad stuff (bacteria and pollutants) OUT.
When you over-wash, you strip away the natural oils and lipids holding that wall together, leaving microscopic cracks in your defense system.
⚠️ Signs your skin barrier is compromised:
* Your face feels tight or "squeaky" immediately after drying.
* You have sudden redness, irritation, or dry, flaky patches.
* Your usual serums and moisturisers suddenly sting when you apply them.
* You're experiencing more breakouts than usual (stripped skin often overproduces oil to compensate!).
🧴 How to reset and repair:
* Ditch the morning cleanse: Unless you have very oily skin, a splash of lukewarm water in the AM is usually all you need to prep for your routine.
* Switch your formula: Swap out harsh, stripping foams for a gentle milk, cream, or hydrating gel cleanser.
* Nighttime only: Stick to properly washing your face just once a day in the evening. (A gentle double-cleanse is fine if you're removing heavy SPF or makeup!)
* Bring on the builders: Load up on repairing ingredients like ceramides, squalane, peptides, and hyaluronic acid to help patch up the wall.
