Today marks 2 years since we started Little Brains. What a journey!
When we chose our launch date, it wasn't random. We chose 15th June because it was my Great Uncle's birthday.
He helped raise me alongside my mum, who had me when she was very young. Some of my happiest childhood memories are of sitting beside him at board meetings, coffee mornings and community events, usually appointed as the official tea and coffee girl while he quietly got on with making things happen.
If there was something happening in the community, he was there. Not for recognition or praise, but because he genuinely cared. He was always the one working tirelessly behind the scenes, planning, organising, fixing problems and making sure everything came together.
He was one of those people who could figure anything out. If something was broken, he'd repair it. If there was a problem, he'd find a solution. He had an incredible attention to detail, loved routines, hated unexpected change, preferred things done in a particular way, and had a mind that noticed things other people missed. Looking back now, there were so many traits that would probably be recognised as autistic today, but to us, that was just who he was.
He taught me that communities aren't built by the loudest voices. They're built by ordinary people who quietly show up, time and time again, because they believe everyone deserves to belong.
Without even realising it, he shaped the way I see the world and the way Little Brains operates today. We don't chase perfection. We don't do things for appearances. We simply show up, keep going and create spaces where people feel accepted exactly as they are.
Two years on, we've welcomed hundreds of families, built friendships, supported one another through difficult days and celebrated countless little victories together. None of it would have been possible without the amazing volunteers, families and supporters who have believed in us from the beginning.
So today isn't just Little Brains' birthday. It's also a quiet thank you to the man who unknowingly inspired so much of it.
Happy birthday, Uncle Jock . I hope you'd be proud of what your little tea girl has built , and a massive thankyou to every single person who has supported this dream.
