Apothecary

An archaic English term for a medical professional who formulates and dispenses Materia Medica ('medicine') to physicians, surgeons and patients.

The Apothecaries' work in the exploration of herbal phytochemical ingredients was the precursor to the modern sciences of chemistry and pharmacology.

In addition to dispensing herbs and medicine, apothecaries offered general medical advice and a range of services that are now performed by other specialist practitioners. Their shops sold ingredients and the medicines they prepared wholesale to other medical practitioners, as well as dispensing them to patients.

Green Wisdom

Green wisdom is the understanding that true wellbeing comes from living in relationship with the land, learning from plants, honouring the seasons, and tending the world that tends us.
It’s the blend of ecological knowledge, herbal tradition, and the quiet intelligence of the green world, guiding how we heal, grow, and live with reciprocity.
Incorporating plant wisdom, seasonal rhythms, soil, weather, and landscape, ecological reciprocity, sustainable growing and foraging, and the wellbeing that comes from living in tune with the land.

Prescriptions ready to be collected.

Hand blended and bespoke medicines in a variety of forms, though mostly teas and tinctures.

Sorry, I just liked the fact I had four patient prescriptions to go out in the same day 😊.

☀️🌿Dandelion - My Beltane Herb ☀️🌿

For Beltane, I’m choosing Dandelion, a plant so often dismissed as a w**d, yet one of the great quiet allies of the season.

Dandelion’s deep taproot, the very thing people try so hard to remove, is a gift to the land: it breaks up compacted soil, draws moisture down into thirsty earth, and opens pathways for other plants to follow. Its golden flowers are among the earliest offerings for pollinators, a bright feast for bees when little else is in bloom.

But Dandelion’s gifts reach far beyond the meadow.

Culinarily, its young leaves bring a bright bitterness to salads, waking up digestion. Its sun bright flowers can be turned into honeyed syrups and baked delights. Its roots, roasted dark and fragrant, make a grounding coffee substitute, and of course, they are one half of the old tonic drink Dandelion and Burdock. Yes, this drink was once brewed from the roots of both plants.

Symbolically, Dandelion is perfect for Beltane. The golden flower mirrors the sun at its rising strength, warm, vital, masculine in energy. The white seed head, round as a moon, carries the softer, more feminine mysteries of release, intuition, and the breath of possibility. Together, they hold the dance of light and dark, growth and letting go.

In herbal medicine, I work with roots, leaves, and flowers. Even the milky stem sap has its folklore uses for warts. As a child, I was told, “Don’t pick dandelions, they’ll make you wet the bed,” and there’s truth in the tale: the leaves are diuretic. I use them to support water retention, gout, and rheumatic conditions. Dandelion is a steadfast ally for the liver and gallbladder, helping the body clear what it no longer needs, which makes it invaluable for skin conditions and detox support. It’s also a classic bitter tonic, encouraging healthy digestion and absorption.

A humble plant, yes, but a deeply useful one, woven into so many treatments and traditions. Perfect for Beltane, when the world is rising into its full green strength and we, too, are invited to grow, release, and unfurl.

Happy Beltane!

Beltane rises at the midpoint between Equinox and Summer Solstice, when spring reaches its full, fragrant crescendo and summer’s first warmth gathers at the edges of the day. Falling on the 1st of May, but often celebrated the evening before. It is a festival of fertility, vitality, and the wild, generous pulse of life, once kept through firelight, blossom, and joyful revelry.

Its symbols still shimmer through time:

🌼The Maypole, ribbon dance of earth and sky, weaving the old magic of union and renewal.

🌿Hawthorn and spring flowers, hung on doorways for protection, worn to honour the May Queen and the greening world.

🌳The Green Man, leaf crowned guardian of growth, stepping from the woods to bless the season.

🔥Bonfires, bright as sunrise, kindled for purification, passion, and the blessing of all that is beginning.

💃Dancing, feasting, and laughter, because Beltane has always been a celebration lived with the whole body.

Even now, when May Day is often stripped of its roots, the old enchantment lingers, in blossom-heavy hedgerows, in the warmth on your skin, as if the earth is swelling with green intention, ready to unfurl beneath the summer sun ☀️.

🌼 A Beltane Wish

May you find one small, shining way to honour this turning
🌹a flower gathered on your walk,
🕯️a candle lit at dusk,
🌳a quiet moment beneath new green leaves.

May the season bless you with growth, joy, and a spark of wild magic.

Depressing...restocking some spent tinctures for in my clinic...4 tinctures and a cream £140, ouch! Somehow I expected it to look more 😊 (But I know tinctures aren't cheap.)

And I need to do another similar order from a different supplier.

If anyone is interested in the Herb Walk this coming Tuesday.

And I haven't contacted about details, here they are...

The walk is circular. It would ordinarily take about 30 mins, but due to stopping to talk about herbs, it will be 60-70 mins. That said, it might take longer, as we might take a detour to see the lambs in a nearby field.

We start from the Blue Bell pub in East Drayton, DN22 0LN, at 1.30.
We then walk through the village, along a quiet, country road for about 10 mins, then along fields and back through the village.

The route is flat but a little uneven and muddy in places. Please wear suitable footwear and clothing for changeable weather. I think the route is accessible for pushchairs (no narrow gaps or styles to get over).

There will be no toilet facilities, as unfortunately, the pub is currently closed.

I will be offering a herb information sheet for participants (mostly aimed at the children) to make notes on if they wish, so please bring a pen/pencil if you want to have a go.

Please bring cash on the day, otherwise if you email me I can send you my bank details. £10 per adult, £1 per child.

Please confirm your attendance/book a place at [email protected]

🌿Hi, my name is Abi, I'm a Medical Herbalist and Horticulturalist. 🌿

I have a herbal medicine practice where I work with individuals who desire a natural approach to resolving their health concerns. I also deliver a range of herb walks, health and wellbeing workshops and make a variety of herbal remedies and teas. I aim to grow and forage as many of the herbs I use in medicine making as possible to ensure their quality, sustainability and be connected to the whole process of medicine making and delivery of healing.

I can treat and support individuals through a variety of health problems, taking a holistic approach that considers mental, emotional, and physical imbalances to create bespoke treatment that can also include diet and lifestyle advice as well as a herbal medicine prescription. I welcome new patients, so if you have a health concern and would like to discuss how I can help, please get in touch.

My Clinic is currently based in East Drayton, Retford. I am not very visible at the moment. I don't have a website as I am going through a rebrand, and as part of this, I wanted to reach out to see which workshops and short courses people would be interested in. Now Spring has sprung, I am starting my Herb Walk and Workshop programme.

I thought I would start with an Easter Herb Walk.
So, if you'd like to get out for a walk and learn about some of the medicinal (and edible) plants growing wild, please join me.

Please contact me for more details, or to book a place on Messenger, WhatsApp, or at [email protected]

The walk will likely be at East Drayton, but I will wait to see the number of participants before finalising. It will be local to the Retford area.
