Today is International Panic Awareness Day and as someone who used to have regular panic attacks, this one feels personal to me.
I remember the racing heart, the shallow breathing, the overwhelming feeling that something terrible was about to happen. I remember thinking there was something fundamentally wrong with me and that this was just how life was going to feel.
It isn't. And if you're experiencing panic attacks, I want you to know that too.
Panic attacks, as terrifying as they feel in the moment, are your nervous system responding to perceived danger. They are not dangerous. They are not a sign of weakness. And with the right tools and support, they can absolutely be overcome.
I know this because I've lived it. And I've spent nearly fifteen years helping others find their way through it too.

Negative feelings are often triggered by our thoughts, yet we don't have to believe everything we think. We can take a few deep breaths to calm our nervous system and then challenge negative thoughts. Check whether a particular uncomfortable thought is based on assumptions or facts. Ask yourself: Is this really true? What else is possible? Could there be another explanation or reason? Challenge your thoughts rather than surrendering. Take back your power and find a thought that feels better, so that you can feel better.

We have the opportunity of a fresh start every day. Awareness is the first step toward change. Are you stressed, anxious and feeling panicky? Some people are not even aware of their feelings. Make a commitment to start noticing your feelings and what your body is trying to tell you. Only if we listen, can we begin to hear important messages from within. Set a reminder to become still and aware even just for a moment, several times a day and watch how that can be an agent for change.
