💙 Oscar and "Lying"

One of the hardest things for us to understand was why Oscar would sometimes tell us things that weren't true.

We'd ask a simple question and get an answer that didn't match what had happened.

At first, it looked like dishonesty.

But over time, we learned there can be more going on beneath the surface.

For some people with ADHD, an answer can come out before they've had time to think. Sometimes they're worried about getting into trouble. Sometimes they're embarrassed, overwhelmed, or trying to avoid disappointing the people they care about.

That doesn't mean lying is okay.

But understanding the reason behind a behaviour helps us support rather than simply punish.

Instead of asking, "Why are you lying?"

We started asking, "What's making it hard to tell the truth right now?"

Understanding behaviour doesn't remove responsibility—it helps create a path towards learning, trust, and growth.

🕷️ Celebrity Learning Disability Story: Tom Holland

Many people know Tom Holland as Spider-Man.

What some people don't know is that he has spoken openly about living with dyslexia and ADHD.

Growing up, reading and processing information could be challenging. Tom has shared that he sometimes needs extra time to read and understand things, and that reading cue cards can be intimidating.

Yet those challenges didn't stop him from achieving his dreams.

Today, he is one of the most successful actors in the world.

His story reminds us that learning differently does not mean you are less capable.

Everyone has strengths.

With the right support, understanding, and determination, people with learning disabilities and neurodiverse conditions can achieve amazing things.

When Oscar was younger, we used to find food hidden in strange places.

There were times when food would disappear from the kitchen, cupboards would be raided during the night, and snacks would turn up tucked away in bedrooms or bags.

At first, it was frustrating and confusing. We wondered why it kept happening.

As we learned more about ADHD, we discovered that some people can struggle with impulse control and thinking through consequences in the moment. For some, food can become something they seek out when they are bored, restless, emotionally overwhelmed, or simply acting on an impulse.

Understanding this didn't make the behaviour okay, but it helped us approach it differently. Instead of seeing Oscar as "naughty" or "stealing food," we started looking at what support he needed and what might be driving the behaviour.

Learning about ADHD changed our perspective from punishment to understanding.

Have you experienced something similar with a child, family member, or yourself?

🌟 DID YOU KNOW? 🌟

🌈 You may need support.
🌈 You may face challenges.

Different doesn't mean less.

💙 Learning Disabilities & Local Authorities 💙

For many families, the journey to getting support for a child with a learning disability can feel overwhelming.

Behind every form, assessment, email, and meeting is a child who deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

Parents often find themselves:
📄 Completing endless paperwork
📞 Chasing updates and responses
⏳ Waiting months for decisions
💭 Feeling unheard or misunderstood
🏫 Fighting for the right educational support
💙 Advocating every day for their child's needs

The reality is that many families spend more time fighting for support than they do receiving it.

Children with learning disabilities deserve:
✨ Early intervention
✨ Appropriate support
✨ Understanding professionals
✨ Inclusive education
✨ Equal opportunities to succeed

Parents should not have to prove their child is struggling enough to deserve help.

A learning disability does not define a child's potential. With the right support in place, children can achieve amazing things.

To every parent currently navigating the Local Authority system:

💙 Keep records.
💙 Keep asking questions.
💙 Keep advocating.
💙 Keep believing in your child.

Your child deserves to be seen, heard, and supported.
