September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month. What do you need to know?

There are 5 gynaecological cancers: womb, ovarian, vulval, cervical and va**nal.

Some common symptoms of gynaecological cancers include:

🩸 Unusual va**nal bleeding or discharge, including any bleeding after the menopause

🎈 Persistent bloating, feeling full more quickly or nausea

👀 A persistent itch, lump or changes to the vulval skin or va**na

😖 Unexplained lower back, abdominal or pelvic pain

These symptoms can be caused by lots of different conditions, but it’s important to get them checked.

Knowing what’s normal for you can help you spot changes that aren’t.

If you notice something that doesn’t feel right, and you’re worried it could be cancer, contact your GP practice.

Almost 90,000 young people had their first MenB vaccination dose in the first two weeks of the new NHS campaign.

MenB can cause serious illnesses like meningitis and sepsis.

You may be eligible for the MenB vaccine if you are:

✅ 17 to 18 years old and born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008

✅ Under 25 and starting university or moving into residential further education for the first time

Eligible 17 to 18-year-olds born between these dates can book online if they’re registered with a GP in England.

Eligible under-25s starting university or residential further education can get vaccinated at a participating pharmacy – no GP registration is needed.

You'll need 2 doses, given at least 4 weeks apart, for the best protection.

A yellow heat-health alert is in place across parts of England from 8-11 August.

Some people – particularly the elderly, very young, or those with existing health conditions – may be more at risk in hot weather.

Some genuinely good news to bring you this afternoon. Under plans announced today by the government, a new Mental Health Emergency Department will be opened at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

It has been awarded a share of £156 million national funding to open the new department, which will aim to get patients into appropriate care in a calm environment, avoiding long waits in A&E.

When I visited UHS last year, I heard directly about the growing pressures on mental health services in the city and the knock-on effect that this is having in our hospitals. I said at the time that I would raise these concerns and I’m really pleased that the government is going to help make it easier for people in Southampton to be seen quickly by specialist teams in the right setting, while also relieving pressure on busy A&E departments.

While specific details of the UHS department are yet to be confirmed, similar clinics piloted by the government since last year are open to walk-in patients as well as those referred by GPs and police, with specialist staff present to treat people in acute mental distress.

This is a government that is serious about turning the tide on mental ill health – preventing more people from reaching crisis, cutting waits for care, and building an NHS which is there for everyone when they need it.
