From today, the RSV vaccine is being offered to more people, with the programme expanding to include some adults aged 65–74 with certain health conditions who are at higher risk from RSV. 📢

RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is a common virus that can cause serious illness, particularly in babies, older adults and people with certain health conditions.

The vaccine helps protect against severe illness caused by RSV. If you receive an invitation, make sure you attend your appointment. 📩

⚠️ As wildfires continue to affect parts of Wales, here are some simple reminders to help keep you and those around you safe.

Smoke from wildfires can irritate your eyes, nose and throat, and may cause coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.

✅ Stay indoors and keep windows closed
✅ If you are travelling, keep your vehicle windows closed, and switch aircon to recirculation mode
✅ Keep inhalers and medication with you
☎️ If you have symptoms and they do not improve when inside, away from smoke or ash, ask for advice from your GP or NHS 111.

Keep your medicines safe in the heat

Many medicines need to be stored below 25°C (some below 30°C). Hot temperatures can affect how well they work.

✅ Store medicines in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
✅ Don't leave medicines in hot cars or warm bags when travelling
✅ Stay hydrated, especially if you take medicines for blood pressure, diabetes or water retention
✅ Some medicines can make your skin more sensitive to the sun – check the patient information leaflet or ask your pharmacist

It's not just medicines that can be affected by heat. Medical devices, including blood glucose monitors and test strips, should also be kept in a cool, dry place and stored according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Heatwave reminder: look after yourself and each other at home

Hot weather can be harder on the body than you might think – especially for older people, young children, and those with long-term health conditions.

Know the signs of heat exhaustion:
• Tiredness, dizziness or headache
• Feeling or being sick
• Sweating a lot, pale or clammy skin
• Cramps
• High temperature, thirst or irritability

If someone has these symptoms, they need to cool down quickly and drink fluids.

✅ How to help:
• Move them somewhere cool
• Remove unnecessary clothing
• Give plenty of water (or rehydration drinks)
• Cool their skin – use cool water, fans, or cold packs
• Stay with them

They should feel better within 30 minutes.

Get urgent help if symptoms get worse or don’t improve – look for confusion, very high temperature, hot skin without sweating, or loss of consciousness.

This week, take a few minutes to:
✅ Call an older relative or neighbour
✅ Check they have enough food, water and medication
✅ Make sure they're keeping cool indoors
✅ Ask if they need any support

Heat rash is common during warm weather and usually clears up on its own. Keeping cool, wearing loose clothing and staying out of the heat can help.

If you're unsure how to manage your symptoms, your local pharmacist can offer advice and recommend products you can buy over-the-counter that may help. They can also signpost you to the most appropriate healthcare service for further support, if needed.

Been for a walk? Check for ticks.

Ticks love long grass and wooded areas - and they’re easy to miss. Some carry Lyme disease, which can cause flu-like symptoms or a red, circular rash.

🧲 If you find one, remove it with tweezers or a tick tool pull slowly and clean the area with soap and watter
👩‍⚕️ See your GP or call NHS 111 if you notice symptoms
🐾 And don’t forget to check your pets too!
