World Cup 2026 is due to kick off this evening and, like other previous sporting events, the general public is guaranteed to start losing their mind and start thinking they can play football like Ally McCoist.
Now, I’m not gonna be the one to discourage people from being more active and getting outside for a kick about or any other sport that they might wish to start.
BUT… I would like to gently remind people that it is not really recommended to sprint the length of the park in order to try and score the winning goal in a family kick about when you’re last exercise session was to run for the bus back in October 2002. You are not Scott McTominay, never will be and, far from the hero nailing the ball in the back of the net, you’re more likely to be ON your back in minor injuries at the Western general, when you should be watching Scotland 🏴 vs Haiti 🇭🇹 ⚽️.
That said, it’s always great to see more people out and active. Like any other sports, be it running, tennis or the gym, it’s important to try and warm your body up a bit before going full pelt. A little cardio to get the blood pumping to the muscles and something simple like some gentle jumping, to prepare the muscles and tendons for action, is it great way to start and prevent injuries from happening. Combine that with a gentle stretch at the end and your body will thank you for it the next day.
If all else fails and, forgetting this advice, you wake up with a bad back or similar after doing Ronaldo’esque knees slides, or taking part in your annual summer exercise event, aka the parents race at sports day, I’ll be at work next week to help 😉.
Enjoy the football ⚽️ folks! 🏴🤞
