Congratulations to the community support team at The Salvation Army Scotland in Edinburgh for completing the First Aid for Mental Health qualification!

Scott spent a very inspirational day with the team recently, having worked with the charity previously during lockdown. The support these people provide in the community is truly amazing and we were thrilled to work with them again.

🔵 Blue Monday - Friend or Foe?

Each year, a Monday around the middle of January is now known as "Blue Monday".

I always read with interest the posts and chatter in relation to this day - generally, opinion seems to fall in to two camps:

1. Blue Monday is a chance to try to be positive and reach out to those around us.

2. Blue Monday is a man-made fad, and that therefore it should be ignored, as every day can be blue, and therefore we should always be trying to look after our mental health.

One question we get asked a lot is 'what are the roles and responsibilities of a mental health first aider?'

The roles and responsibilities of a Mental Health First Aider are:

✅ Identifying the signs and symptoms of mental ill health
✅ Start supportive conversations
✅ Listen non-judgementally and provide reassurance
✅ A point of contact for anyone experiencing a mental health problem
✅ Assess the risk of self-harm and su***de
✅ Signpost and encourage professional support
✅ Summon for the appropriate emergency services if necessary
✅ Maintain confidentiality
✅ Reduce mental health stigma

Our regulated First Aid for Mental Health courses arm colleagues with the tools and confidence to carry out these roles within their organisations, bringing employee wellbeing to the fore.

A huge proportion of UK employees are suffering from depression or anxiety, yet few would admit it to their employer even when taking time off to deal with it, according to research.

The findings of the report show a clear need for employers to support to their workers in all three areas of:

✅financial
✅physical health.
