‘It just seems amazing that something as intense and specific as pain, we haven't yet figured out exactly what we need to do in the brain to change it.

You might think, okay, that's because fundamentally there isn't an easy solution. Now, there may not be a straightforward solution, but if you understand what different regions of the brain are doing and what we need to do to those, then we must be close to something which could actually fundamentally modulate pain.

I think we're close to a rapid rise in our ability to change pain. I am quite optimistic that within my academic lifetime, someone somewhere will really figure this out.’

In Airing Pain 155 we speak to Ben Seymour, Professor of Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Oxford, about the future of pain.

‘We're having to build policies at a university level for students wearing glasses with cameras. There's two sides to this. Do we stop allowing that to happen? Or do we prepare people for a world where people will wear those all the time?

If in ten years it would be crazy for your doctor to not wear those glasses because they can do all sorts of amazing calculations or they can read body language better than a human, whatever it is, maybe we universities need to be helping people to navigate that future world.

But on the other hand, in terms of academic integrity it's an absolute nightmare because how do you know if you're assessing what the person actually knows and can do?'

In Airing Pain 155 we talk to Joshua W. Pate, Associate Professor at the University of Technology Sydney, about the latest developments in AI.

What happened in 1965?

The first spacewalk, the Voting Rights Act. The Beatles played Shea Stadium and Bob Dylan went electric.

And a new theory revolutionised our understanding of pain.

Montreal-born Ronald Melzack and Nottingham-born Patrick Wall were researchers at McGill University, Canada. In November 1965, they published an article introducing their ‘gate control theory of pain'.

Sixty years later, this is still considered one of the most influential theories of pain. It has spawned many studies and influenced many therapeutic approaches, including the development of TENS, spinal cord stimulation, and mindfulness-based pain management.

To honour this legacy, every year the British Pain Society invite a person of current standing to deliver the Pat Wall Lecture. This year, they invited Professor Karen Davis of the University of Toronto.

We had the pleasure of speaking to Karen about Patrick Wall — Life President of Pain Concern — and innovation in pain today.

‘If I have seen further, it’s by standing on the shoulders of giants.’

So wrote Isaac Newton to fellow scientist Robert Hooke back in 1675. The two didn’t always agree, but the sentiment, that for the most part research and discovery is built on the work of those who came before, is as true today as it was then.

Three and a half centuries later, The British Pain Society has just launched its Year of AI, Technology and Innovation in Pain Management.

In episode 155 of Airing Pain we join the conversation, exploring the promises and challenges of developments in neuromodulation, virtual reality and AI.
