As we move into June everything is growing growing growing! We have plenty of wee seedlings almost ready to be planted out into our beds - California Poppies, Chamomile, Borage, Milk Thistle and Hyssop, Red Clover to name a few as well as some beautiful little Honeysuckle plants πŸͺ΄ πŸ’šπŸͺ΄

We have two volunteer sessions this week where we will be building a Sycamore pole frame for these wee Honeysuckle beauties to climb up - soon enough we hope they will cover the poles and create a cosy nook to sit in and add some height to the garden too β˜•οΈπŸ«–β˜•οΈ

Sign up for one or both sessions this week on Wednesday 4-6pm and Friday 10-1pm, we can’t wait to hang out with the plants with you! https://volunteersignup.org/H987R?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio&fbclid=PAb21jcASKfxxleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZA81NjcwNjczNDMzNTI0MjcAAaf-KVv4SO6VvhnA-pToYUWc7hsNbGu-Nc81Hj0OVzowqYqJonstRz7qQEbC7w_aem_vht9MH260Vj-3FkQE0XusA πŸ’šπŸŒ±πŸ’š

Setting up for ourfinal in person session Edinburgh Agroecology Coop - community herbalism with Grass Roots Herbal Foundations 25/26

We'll be investigating the Musculoskeletal system, Primary Herbal Actions, herbs we use on the farm, Spring Ecological Herb Gardening & chatting about lessons learnt through the year & everyone's future plans

Our 2026/27 program is now open for bookings https://grassrootsremedies.podia.com/foundation-course πŸŒ±πŸ’šπŸŒ±

Using a recipe of basically benign neglect from - fermenting some Rosebay Willowherb, also known as πŸ”₯🌱 or Sunday name Chamaenerion angustifolium

The fermented then dried leaves (& maybe some flowers later in the year) were historically used as tea, often called Ivan's Chai πŸ«–β˜•οΈπŸ«–

An alternative to the tea grown and imported post-colonisation - this is a delicate blend likened to the fanciest green tea you've ever tasted πŸ˜‹ πŸ’šπŸŒ±

Our pals from Fibreshed Scotland - have an amazing Stitch It Don't Ditch It event coming up next Monday 1st June 7-8.30pm

https://opencollective.com/fibreshed-scotland/events/stitch-it-dont-ditch-it-with-fibreshed-scotland-fb743043

When we have clothes we care about, it's lovely to extend their life through careful mending. It also does so much good by keeping them out of landfill.

This event is an opportunity to find out more about how Fibreshed Scotland celebrates and values natural fibres, as well as getting β€˜tailored’ mending advice from our local hero, Mary Morton. Bring along something that needs mending, to stitch and chat with the group, or drop in with your specific mending query that Mary will answer on the spot.

This is a free event, but Mary is generously offering it as a contribution to Fibreshed Scotland’s work. If you’d like a ticket - which we’re offering on a pay what you like basis (Β£0 - Β£10+)

🌟✨️ They're Here ✨️🌟

Elderflower πŸ’› Sambucus nigra

Gorgeous fragrant blooms, filling the air with summer scent. 🍾 - whilst always leaving plentyWe'll be enjoying these in teas, tinctures, cordials & of course ferment-y bits like Elderflower behind for the other beings who exist amongst the branches & to develop into beautiful, bountiful Elderberries πŸ«πŸ’œπŸ«

Elderflower is a key herbal ally when we have sneezy allergies like hay-fever (combine with Nettles 🌿 & Plantain 🌱) and for colds (maybe with Yarrow 🌼) βœ¨οΈπŸ’›βœ¨οΈ

Soraya and the volunteers had a cosy afternoon processing Skulllcap (Scutelleria lateriflora) seeds and tending to the Pasqueflower (Pulsatilla vulgaris /Anemone pulsatilla) beds with some cute new signage

πŸŒ±πŸ’šπŸŒ±Both plants are herbal allies on our Grass Roots Herbal Foundations course amd great allies for community herbalism. We're particularly keen to grow Pasqueflower as its wild population is at risk of over harvesting. It can be a bit tricksy to grow, but we're getting there with a little perseverance and consciousness of the soil and other conditions

Skullcap on the other hand is a hardy Mint family member whose bountiful harvest gives a generous amount of medicine whilst also allowing us to leave a good quantity to seed which we than collect, share and grow on the next year πŸŒ±πŸ’šπŸŒ±
