Reflexology treatments: gentle and peaceful brain wave fluctuations

One of the beautiful things that can happen during a reflexology treatment is a shift in brain wave activity.

Let’s be honest. Constipation isn’t exactly dinner table conversation.
But it’s common, uncomfortable, and very much part of real-life body stuff.

A systematic review and meta-analysis found that foot reflexology may help improve constipation symptoms, suggesting it could be a helpful complementary support when things are… not quite moving as planned.

The study reviewed 11 articles, with nine included in the meta-analysis, and found a significant effect on constipation scores.

Reflexology isn’t a replacement for medical advice, hydration, fibre or movement, but it may be one gentle way to support the body’s natural rhythm.

We often talk about how reflexology feels - calming, grounding, restorative.
But what’s happening underneath that?

A double-blind randomised controlled trial (the gold standard in research) looked at what happens in the body during a reflexology session.

Researchers measured real-time cardiovascular responses in healthy volunteers and found:
✔️ Immediate changes in haemodynamics (how blood flows through the body)
✔️ A measurable effect on cardiac function, specifically the cardiac index
✔️ Effects observed during targeted reflexology on foot areas linked to the heart

In simple terms?
This wasn’t just “feeling relaxed” — the body showed objective, physiological changes in real time.

It’s a powerful reminder that touch therapies like reflexology can have measurable impacts beyond relaxation alone.

There’s a strange guilt around rest these days.
Like if you’re not doing something, you should be.

But your body doesn’t work like that.

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is actually stop.
Not scroll. Not half-switch off. Properly stop.

Reflexology gives your system a chance to catch up - to settle, reset, and just breathe for a bit.

And weirdly… everything feels a bit easier after.

BUT, what a big statement! Let’s look in detail:-

‘Releases tension’ can refer to skeletal muscles which is great but maybe the biggest win is when we look at smooth muscle. You’ll find smooth muscle - aka involuntary muscle - in most of your body systems.

🌿 cardiovascular ✅
🌿 lymphatic ✅
🌿 respiratory ✅
🌿 digestive ✅
🌿 urinary ✅
🌿 skin ✅
🌿 endocrine (via organs it impacts)

So, for such a small statement - its impact is wide really!

Reflexology often gets reduced to “a foot treatment.”
In reality, the feet are simply where the work begins.

Reflexology uses specific pressure points on the feet that correspond with different systems of the body. By stimulating these reflex points, the aim is to encourage relaxation, support circulation, and help the nervous system shift out of prolonged stress mode.

For many people, the biggest benefit isn’t about their feet at all. It’s the moment their body finally slows down.

The sigh.
The softened shoulders.
The quiet mind.

Sometimes the feet are simply the doorway to the rest of the body. 👣
